So I've seen a few threads about how the Academy drops people into the main game too early. My normal response is either that the older guys know what they're doing, HTFU, and all that great stuff. I decided to try rolling a new character to see just how bad they have it.
Holy mother of derp.
Don't get me wrong, since I know more about the game than a real newberry, I stomped through the Academy using a laser rifle / SMG combo on an Amarr suit (I know lasers are in a bad spot, so I figured I'd gimp myself a bit to make it harder). I came out of there very close to a 3.0 K/D. Had a few games where I went over 20 kills with only a handful of deaths.
Then I got my diploma in WP-harvesting and went out into the real world. Then, as soon as I stepped outside the confines of the academy, I was promptly shot in the face.
Repeatedly.
I have yet to go positive in one match. I can get a kill or two now and then, but it's usually by stealing it from someone else or via Fused Locus Grenades. I'll go down faster than your mom did on prom night as soon as I'm spotted. I'm pretty sure a sneeze from one of these guys would wipe out half of my shields.
As much of a fanboi as I am, not many people are going to want to play if this is what they have to look forward to after leaving the Academy in hopes of one day becoming equal. I figured that since I've been playing since closed beta and have more knowledge in general of the Eve universe compared to the scrubs that signed up yesterday, I'd fare a bit better than what I've been reading about. Couldn't have been more wrong.
Rarely did I separate from the group, I used everything I knew about the game to see if I could get any advantage. Gear definitely makes a world of difference. My alt will be AFK'ing in many MCC's before he sees the ground again.
What we can do about it, I haven't the foggiest idea. I'll let you guys post your experience / suggestions / wordvomit in here.
TL;DR - Made an alt to see why Academy whiners were whining. I'm a changed man. Litter this thread with wordvomit on how to rework the current system. |

I think matchmaking on WP's would be a good idea, as long as it only stays for pub matches.
I would also like to see it take into account other variables, such as skillpoints earned over lifetime and total matches played. Otherwise the MCC AFK'er with 10m SP might get into a match with a hardcore newberry with maybe 1.5m SP. |

100% agreed. Look at this thread. They look the same. Great thread. I like how we have most of the same thoughts on this, even though the time spent playing between us makes a pretty wide gap. |

Phantomnom wrote:Stop punishing people for playing the legit system and unlocking Protogear, just make a better matchmaking system and squad matchmaking also and you won't see a quarter as much Protostomping. Pretty much this. As soon as we stop throwing newbies into the grinder, we'll probably see a lot less nerf / complaint threads and more actual useful feedback from new players that are having fun. |

SmileB4Death wrote:Have a few academy tiers? Example; 10k WP: tier 1 20k WP: tier 2 40k WP: tier 3 60k WP: tier 4 Etc.. What do you guys think? I'd prefer a system that encompasses both WP and SP. MCC AFK'ers get 0 WP's for their match, but get decent SP rewards. Hell, if you wanted to, you could go full proto in Academy with enough AFK'ing (granted the time it would take is a stretch, but possible). |

Isn't teamwork big in Dust? Definitely. One squad of communicating teammates rolls over an entire team of uncoordinated rabble. |

Big miku wrote:You know what would help a lot? PVE gameplay modes.
Just get that PVE in.
Killing Drones Putting Down rowdy Bandits Pacifying rebels disrupting illegal supply lines ect ect
Make with the PVE so new players can do something other than get crushed. While I would love some PvE right about now and think it would be a great game mode for new players, I'll bide my time a bit in hopes that CCP spends some extra time balancing everything out. Don't want everyone to have it too easy, or to have hordes of AI stomp on proto teams.
Would actually be kinda funny to watch pubstompers get stomped by AI, now that I think about it. |

hgghyujh wrote:yea I would agree raising the cap by double for academy battles would not be a bad Idea.
Actually what I would like to see is the academy WP cap doubled but give new players the option to play both normal and academy battles after the current cap so they can start adjusting.
also better matchmaking. I'm not quite sure we have any sort of matchmaking working right now. I think it just throws 16 people on one side against 16 people on the other. |
