As of today, I am actually making money as a fabled Assault Dropship Pilot. I have been fortunate enough to find my perfect skillet and models to fit my Python to survive most encounters. I still have to, however, avoid many things, and keep my eye on EVERYTHING. but I think that this could finally work. today I have made 2 mill, only because I had to pay for the initial ship. To do this yourself, you need to gauge your enemy, if you cant avoid a volley of AV, you need to recall, and work with your ground tactics. but it is possible. |

Also, great story. Hopefully a success story of an ADS pilot will get others in the air. |

that why I preform the magical recall, after I soak a shot from a railgun and the Breach forge gun only takes half of my shields, before I apply hardeners |

True story I swear.
Yesterday with my speed scout min I jumped off of a hill and nova knifed someone in the driver seat of their LAV.
I was attempting to "land" on the LAV and get the turret operator.
After slashing the driver on accident the LAV stopped moving (I think he thought I was a friendly somehow), and the gunner hopped out.
He was met with my blade as well.
My pilot is switching to the incubus after he gets the respec.
The python is faster but I am hoping the Incubus has a better chance of survival.
I went through 29 million flying that thing. |

great, hope to see you in the air.
remember that the Assault Dropship is not a solo vehicle. most of my survivals come from my side turrets or an infantry killing the AV personnel for me.
I do not have personal experience from the Armor ADS, but I have seen it in action, and it does survive a beating.
you do want to have a secondary suit for when something goes wrong, you can earn a profit that way.

The only thing that concerns me is the lack of speed and swarms.
I can pull off some crazy moves with my python. I cant remember the exact name of the module but the one that adds torque bonus was pimp in my low slots.
I would keep the Python if I had enough PG to pop an armor rep in a low without gimping something else (shields) in my highs. |

To the OP
I too have had brief rather profitable runs in the ADS, they were always interrupted by an inconsiderate forge gunner or two. |

Speed penalty is not as bad as it looks like, IMO the incubus handle better. The python feels like it has oodles of power that constantly has to be reigned and you often end up having to make rather large turns to kill your speed. The incubus on the other hand feels like its always given you the exact amount of power you require and not a tad more, plus the thing has a fairly ridiculous tank for a dropship. It's only real downside is that it can feel a tad slow at times when you'd rather have disappeared off into the sky like the python can, and it's at a serious disadvantage against pythons in A2A combat. |

from what I have heard, it's speed is between the Myron and the Python, so you should be fine, just don't pull off any tricks untill you know you can do it |

Been there done that, I've been making profit off my dropships since last build. Haven't yet met a worthy pilot opponent, either shoot them down or they crash on their own. Even crashing your dropship into mine doesnt kill me anymore. I love my fitting and shall keep it a secret as long as I can.
So far only Veteran skilled proto forge gunners MIGHT have a shot to take me down... only met 3 so far.
I consider myself a skilled Dropship pilot... but still have a long way to go. |

I thought so too until the first time I experienced it. So far its only been with shield DS. I was on my Python and this Myron was purposely trying to smack into me. It ended up hitting me and was ready to get crazy when I saw the explosion but then realized that my python still hovering with 1/4 shields left while the myron turned into a ball of fire falling to the ground.
I then tested it on another Python. It was annoying as it kept trying to fly away and got fed up with my turrent. So I switched to ramming and same thing happened, python falls and mine remains unscathed. low on hp dont get me wrong, but not on fire. |

Python pilots take note. the Gallente grass is not greener
TLDR at the end
I used to fly Gallente before the respec on the 28th. I have always had all my SP in DS. I was fully kitted and experienced. In my opinion the Caldari versions are better. much better. Here is why :
1) The most common AV is swarms and AV nades. Anyone has access to these. these will murder you in an armour Drop ship. In many matches if you are in a DS people who died to the tank that is there or you will spawn in with swarms. Now swarms are a menace more for their denial effect.
2)Swarms are easy to hit a DS with from across the map. You often find several coming at you at once and they just keep on coming. Skill in most cases due to tracking cannot help you avoid them. So you will get hit by many and in armour they do hurt.
But the danger factor is increased by the type of suit that carries them. Swarm players are not in heavy suits typically and they have a side arm. This is a problem because it is your support infantry that eliminates pesky AV for you. But with the mobility of a light assault suit and a side arm swarm players can chase you and defend themselves well.
Their weapons track you and are low skill to use. Avoiding them is hard.
Compare this to Forge Guns.
1)forge users are slow and they have no side arm. They cannot defend themselves as we'll, are slow so cannot chase to reposition for another shot and are easy for infantry to target. Their weapon alo light up pre-shot. There fire then is reliant on skill and aim and you can use skill to avoid it.
So in armour swarms will ruin you day, are hard to avoid and ubiquitous. Add to this AV grenades that are strong against armour, and the new flaky lock and mass driver and you have many enemies that can deny you low and high altitude. forge guns too really are killer to both types of DS
however in Caldari swarms are easier to avoid due to speed. do less damage. Extra CPU allows easy fitting of full x3 proto rockets and afterburner, shields and repper. Giving you resistance to the common AV and a means to avoid the one AV you are weakest to.
I find in Gallente while you can tank more, in practice you still have to bug out after a single rail and swarms force to to retreat faster giving your gunners less time to try get the swarmer guy. You spend more time in retreat. And A2a you are in trouble as rocket rule those engagements.
Tldr
Caldari is the better DS option |
