They got them assigned to a temp account which will be used only for this event. When someone buys the collector's edition they will get those items in WHICHEVER character they choose.

It would be strange if you got to keep said characters after the event.

Not just 'presumably'. They stated somewhere that the Templar characters will be removed at the end of the event. Unfortunately I don't have a link to the quote handy, but it was in a dev post somewhere :)

I do hope CCP doesnt pull another stupid stunt with that. Hence my reason for asking. It's all fun for these events but if they are going do this and let the people keep the dropsuits let them be atleats different from the collectors editions for they advertised it to be exclusive. make it gallente stuff or sommat. Otherwise it just means they can't be arsed to whip up another skinset. Anyway, I hoep CCP is smart enough to make another stupid decision like that.

That gives the Templars an isk-ish reward yet gives them a reward that ISN'T Isk, while maintaining the exclusivity of the collectors edition swag.
