Well I thought I was doing great in the game up until I "graduated" from Academy. But not so much anymore haha. So now I need a LOT of help from the vets in this game so that I can actually contribute to the team. To put things in another light let's say I'm playing an MMO and I just left newbie island at level 10. I'm feeling great but suddenly I'm forced into the PvP server where the level 50-60's like to gank the newbies :c
So my question to the veterans in this game and to all of the new players who have managed to surmount these odds is: How the heck do you do it?
I spent hours studying different roles and even more hours testing out different starter 500k sp builds with alts. Finally I found a couple roles that I really enjoyed and decided to focus on the nova knife/scout build. While I was in the academy I was consistently in the top 5 and when I managed to get lucky and find a squad that communicates I'd be in the top 3. Heck, I even lone wolfed it a couple times and got 1. Now that I'm out of the academy I'm officially gimped and my K/D count is suffering (at an increasing rate) and I can't hack objectives without getting mowed down by a heavy or sniper. I can't even sneak up on the snipers because unlike in the academy EVERYONE can scan me out here in the "real" game. Now I really don't believe that a K/D ratio defines what a good player is but when my K/D goes from 2.8 to 1.3 I have to stop and wonder what's going wrong.
Even though I LOVED the nova knife/scout build (and I was VERY good at it) in academy I was forced to apply for a skill respec because I'm absolutely worthless now. Eventually when I have more SP I'd have a dangerous build on my hand (but that would require a LONG time to get a good dropsuit and profile dampeners to get my scan profile back to under the radar).
So what am I doing wrong? I don't play assault rifle characters. I just don't. I'm not a CoD player and I hate run n gunning. I really enjoyed that build because I really felt like I contributed to the team and it was so much fun "speed tanking" when I got discovered or throwing a flux -> run and hide -> flank and stab.
I decided after the respec I would swap to be a dropship pilot (I love flying these things and I'm not too shabby) but I don't know where the ISK is going to come from.
What should I do guys? I'm completely lost. I feel like my only option is to walk away from the game for a month and let my passive SP build with an Omega booster.
(This isn't a QQ thread. I'm honestly lost and have no idea what I'm supposed to do now. How can I improve as a player to be competitive with SP hogs)

Maybe shotgun scout? Still speedy and a little wiggle room in range. |

I considered that as well but I'd hate to spend my respec by pumping into shotgun scout just to find out my shotgun can't pierce anyone's shields :p I have an active and passive booster running at the moment (Only to play "catch up") so I can't exactly play another character and let those go to waste. In your experience how do shotgun scouts fair? While I'd have a little wiggle room I'd still be in trouble as 1 or 2 stray hits would be enough to kill me (I'm using a dragonfly scout suit atm). Militia/level 1 weapons didn't really cause much trouble for my low defense but I don't know about prototypes with massive SP pumped into their skills. At this point all I want to do is help my team but I can't do that when I'm dead xD
After I get a USB hub so I have a USB slot for my headset (KB/M player here) I plan on joining a corp so that hopefully I won't be stuck with lonewolf syndrome anymore ^^. All of my friends are PC players and don't own PS3's so I haven't really had the opportunity to meaningfully work on good teamwork. |

Just ran a few rounds with a milita shotgun and I'm not doing too shabby with it. Luckily its pretty similar to the nova knife scout so just had to swap out a few modules. I even managed to take down a few heavies. Its definitely improved my game but I do miss the stealth factor of the knives but oh well :p
Thanks for the advice! Still not sure if this is what I'll respec into but its probably my top option atm |

You don't need profile dampeners if you already using a scout. Only people can detect you are the ones which actually spend SP on profile enhancers and other scouts, which are rare anyway. The knife is only stealthy because it doesn't give a loud sound, and shotguns boing sound is now more quiet. Shooting doesn't makes you appear on the radar. If you don't like guns then you could try vehicles. Dropships suck atm so I suggest a tank or an LAV.
Edit: Have you tried the profile scanner? The scout is also good for setting drop uplinks fast. |

Do whatever feels good. Having fun with your choice of specialization is what it ultimately comes down to. I love my knives and I won't look back. If you miss using them, keep using them. Just be sure to pick a light weapon to compliment its strength and attempt to cover its weaknesses. |

I don't mind guns but the only FPS games I usually play are the more realistic ones like Red Orchestra or BF3 on realism mode. I think I'd enjoy speccing into vehicles. While I think piloting a dropship would be cool I understand what you mean. Perhaps I'll give tanks a go. I've seen some awesome tankers on youtube to draw inspiration from.
And I actually haven't tried the profile scanner. Is it worth it? And unfortunately I don't have the CPU for an uplink yet
ladwar wrote:welcome just bend over and take it, once you get 5~mil sp you should start doing better if u focus on something. Lmao xD That's usually how it goes in PvP servers (longtime MMO player) but unfortunately I have an ISK investment and K/D ratio I gotta maintain until then. Haha

I'd love to keep playing knives but ever since I left the academy I don't seem to be doing as well. Don't know if I need to change my strategy or what. |

One thing I'd like to add about scouts. In the last build when scouts had a fair bit more speed, I ran cardiac regulators. But in uprising the name of the game has changed. It's all about raw speed. Especially with knives. I would try and get my hands on enhanced kinetic catalyzes ASAHP. the quicker you can close the distance the quicker you can start stabbing away. (also doesn't hurt to run at 10+m/s when its time to get the hell out of dodge)
also, if you want to run knives, minmatar scout is a must. From what I understand, the damage listed on the knives is for an uncharged attack. A full charge deals 2x the listed damage. (also, don't forget the damage listed is per knife and you stab twice) so here's some numbers to make you drool a bit
Proto Knives: 200 dmg
so at a full charge, that's 800 damage. With L5 minmatar scout that becomes 250 damage per hit for a total of 1000 damage at full charge. Keep in mind that's with no proficiency or damage mods.
Just for fun, with 3 complex damage mods and L5 proficiency, it becomes 1331 at full charge (say goodbye heavies)
What it all boils down to is the nova knives in the right hands are EXTREMELY deadly in the right hands.......once you have the skills to back them up. As much as I loved my knife build i ended up speccing into Amarr assault for that scrambler rifle bonus but that was my choice. If you wish to go on knifing rampage just keep at it. You'll get there eventually.
just remember that you are going to be in a scout suit and that means that even all specced out with shield extenders and the works you are going to die from a mean look. That just means that you have to play smarter. If they see you coming, you're doing it wrong. It's allright if they see you coming at the last second, just remember to strafe as you sprint (hit A/D while moving forward) The best tactic I've found for my strafing so far (if they see you):
1) sprint strafe to the left or right
2) As you see them starting to correct their aim to hit you turn 90* the opposite way you were strafing crossing through their stream of fire (turn left if you were strafing right or vice versa)
3) run a few steps then turn back to face them and start strafing the other way.
4) rinse repeat until you get close enough to stick them.
many a TacAR has met their demise due to this
also switch it up now and then. while strafing right, fake left then keep going right, then cut a hard left when you're closer
Misc notes: with heavies, turn with them. you always want to be trying to get behind them. At 2000 RPM it takes less than 1 second of fire to kill you. Shotguns, only take a stab or two and try to get round a corner. or try to keep dodging. (these were my biggest nemesis as a knifer)
I hope this wall of text helps some and look forward to hearing of many success stories to come (typing this out kinda makes me wish i had stayed ninja knife. C'est la vie) |

If you do not want to give up on nova knives, speak to radar R4D-47, sontie, or maken tosh. These guys are the community's experts on nova knives. If you need advice, then these guys are the ones you NEED to speak to first. |

you have to suffer a little, grind some SP and everything will be fine, it's this game mechanic, i hope they will implement a better matchmaking, to let people have fun if they want impegnative matches or more soft matches. |

I don't have too much more to add to what everyone else is saying, but a KDR of 1.3 with knives after getting thrown to the wolves is fantastic by most standards. Keep at it.
I would recommend that you think about tactics primarily. There might not be a lot to improve upon, given you're a good knife user, but never, ever attack head on, and always flank. You might find the SMG useful - It's short range and excellent for mowing down people when you can't quite finish them with the knives, or so you can kill people more than a metre away from you. |

Sparhawk: Oh wow thank you that's great advice! I try to ignore heavies like the plague ^^ They're usually backed up by at least one other well armored player. I don't even bother taking the risk anymore unless one of them is hacking and I have a clear kill. I actually haven't specced into any race specific scout suits yet. Still using the one from the merc pack but I'll definitely go minmatar. That damage makes me salivate :>
I'll keep working on my tactics though. I've reasoned its the nature of the game and I'll just have to adapt or go AFK for a month while my passive sp builds. Seeing as how I actually LIKE this game I'm just going to suffer through it and gtfo if I see pub-stompers xD |
