If you are a shooter then select an Assault suit or a Logi and max it out. Yes it will take a lot of SP and probably 3-4 months to get to a really decent level (not max but good) and you will be able to go toe to toe with a proto with some chance of victory 1 vs 1.

After a certain point you can only expand side ways. (I.e at a certain point you can't be better with a certain fitting) So if you specialize and focus on that, you'll soon be as good in that (skillpoint wise) as anybody can be.
