CCP did not start EVE Online with a 500,000+ subscription base overnight; they worked at it over a span of many years to get the game to the mirror-shine state it is in right now.
DUST 514 is in a state that every other game goes through, especially MMOs: that awkward phase when the players can first get their hands on the real meat of the game, and the developers need to just sit back and watch their well-intentioned plans go to poop.
DUST is not a perfect game. I'd even go so far as to say it is not a *good* game at the moment. Many of my friends who play this game insist that, if it weren't for the promises of things to come by CCP and the current connection the game boasts with EVE Online, they would not be playing it.
However, this does not mean DUST is doomed.
In the same vein as poor word of mouth and bad reviews being bad for DUST, the game will gain momentum and support as it continues to be pushed and developed by CCP's team. All the nay-sayers now may just be eating their words in a year or two once the team in Shanghai hits their stride. Already we are seeing encouraging signs.
Many people complained about the changes and additions made in Uprising. And guess what: CCP listened! There are multiple threads filled with CCP's feedback on the playerbase's reactions, discussing hotfixes, bugs, and future changes they will make. We have the beginnings of the CPM, dedicated players and forumites (and Ironwolf ), working to open the floodgates for proper communication between CCP and the players.
CCP is not going to abandon DUST. I haven't done any indepth math, (some corpmates have) but as far as I can tell, the game is already proving economically feasible, and we've only just seen a full release. In a console world full of 5 million sale flops, that's promising, if nothing else.
If you're asking whether CCP knows what it is doing, the answer is a big fat YES! Attempting something like this is not easy, and CCP would not have tried if they did not think they could succeed. But do not expect immediate results. CCP is always one for the long game. At Fanfest, they spoke of year-long roadmaps, and three-to-five year plans. If that's true for DUST, we may not be seeing much in the very near future, but down the line the possibilities may be drool-worthy indeed. |
