The potential for Dust is there. We just need to work with CCP to make it reality. Everything won't come to us on day on a silver platter. FPS's don't GATHER players as they go on. They LOSE players, like every other game. Only MMORPG's gather players with time, and that's only if they keep doing things right that no one else does - which Dust isn't doing well. By the way, it took EVE over a decade to get over 500,000 players. Seems like a lot, but that's only 1/16 the player base of WoW. 1. Eve Online was thought to fail at the time because many people didn't like the idea of an MMO with a super-harsh universe and predicted it will fail. On top of that, Eve Online came at a time where everyone expected every MMO to be a theme-park-style game. 2. You are correct to assume that WoW has millions of players compared to Eve Online. But look at it from a quality perspective and you will see that WoW players are just roaming around in theme parks while Eve's small player base created one of the most lively and dynamic universes in the history of MMO's. Tell me, does WoW allow you to scam players, gank high-sec dwellers unprovoked, control the market, corner the market, burn the market, extort/ransom players, create ponzi schemes and rob guilds all without any punishment from the developers? One more thing. Dust 514 is coming at a time where players expect first person shooters to be like Call of Duty, Battlefield or Halo. But the fact of the matter is that Dust is trying to go into territory that many people find taboo. Eve Online was also going into territory that many MMO players considered taboo as well. The game platforms are different, but the story and concept are the same.
This couldn't have been said any better. Eve is a whole other beast compared to most modern mmorpg , one of the greatest things about it that has always had me hooked was the fact that our choices were near limitless and could effect the lives of so many.
Watching entire alliances rise to giants, to only slip and fall from a small pebble within their own. To be able to shut down entire markets on certain goods , enforcing taxes and penalties on other people because you simply wanted to. Blowing up one guys entire stock of wealth in one ship he has gathered over 3+ years worth tens of billions and then calling him a dumbass and inviting him to your chat so you can hear him rage while you loot all of his belongings.. all perfectly legal.. the actions list is broad and goes on and on and on lol.
Dust 514 has just begun, it's not meant to be 100% balanced and fair for every encounter you face.. you have the choice of playing this game, the choice of playing solo and getting stomped in pubs, the choice of just hanging around meeting new people and joining random groups to do slightly better, or even the choice to take on allies from within eve and become vastly wealthy overnight and fight beside some guys who are serious and here to play for keeps engaging in some intense battles where every hp counts, and situational awareness is a must.. none of that gun ho rambo **** flies there.
Give this game a few years to merge even deeper with eve and it's mentality, we will have one hell of a game, if your able to handle it.. it's about control and getting it at any means, not having good times everyday going gg guys that was fun and shaking hands all walkingaway with a smile
