I recently performed some tests in an attempt to determine if the Hacking skill and Codebreaker module affect the objective contested timer. To clarify, this is the state the objective enters after you upload the virus (hack). This is the window in which the enemy team can counterhack the objective and prevent it from switching.
To test this, I used a character with no Hacking skill and a character with hacking 5, 1x complex codebreaker, and Minmatar logistics 1, resulting in a 55% bonus to hack.
Results
Unskilled Time to Hack: 10-11s Time to flip: 39-40s Time to counter-hack: 20s
Skilled: Time to hack: 5.5-6s TIME TO FLIP: 45-46s Time to counter-hack: Insufficient data
In order to record a result, I had to perform it at least 5 times. I started the timer the moment I pressed the hack button to the moment the hack wheel disapeared. Contested state was timed from the moment the hack was completed to the moment the objective flipped sides. The results listed above are averages of all my results.
As far as I can tell, Hacking bonuses result in appropriately decreased hacking time, but slightly increased contested timers.
I was under the impresion that hacking bonuses affected the contested timer as well as the time to hack. My results show that not only is this not true, but is currently bugged. |

+1 I appreciate the players that take the time to test things like this. |

wow i can't decide if this is intended or not but it sounds to me like the total time from hack start to objective flip is uniform regardless or hack skill or amount of hackers. time saved hacking is added onto contested time... or at least that is the conclusion one makes based on your preliminary data.
definitely worth further research, you do good work have a +1 |

I'll be performing more tests tomorrow. A larger data set should give us a better picture of what is going on. |

After more testing, I've concluded that one of my initial results was flawed. After dozens more data points, the average of my results is more in line with the time to flip of an unskilled character.
Unskilled: Time to flip: 44-45s
This means that Hacking skills and modules ONLY affect the time to hack/counterhack, not the speed at which the contested timer moves.
Personally, this is a huge letdown for me. If hacking affected the speed at which the objective flipped, it would be a much more useful skill, and much more in line with its 1.55 million SP cost.
What do you guys think? Should the hacking skill and module affect the time it takes for a virus to flip an objective? Would this incentivize you to invest the SP and dedicate a module slot? |
