Alright so last night was my first experience in Dust. Frankly it was really confusing to me. I went into skirmishes not really knowing what I should be doing.
Being a former World of Warcraft & Black Ops type gamer, this game threw me for a loop. My initial thoughts, not knocking the game were that, itGÇÖs kind of bland that you are basically in the same room the entire time outside of combat. (The game was free so IGÇÖm not really complaining).
Skill building is a whole different beast in this game compared the others I mentioned for sure. Frankly, got no clue what IGÇÖm doing here ha. I think my first step frankly, needs to be to join a Corp with some knowledge and experience. Anyone got anything like that?
Secondly this is really the important question. When it comes to building a character and choosing skill books, what do I want to do first? I would like to become a sniper but is there a race that is ideal for that? I read that races have basically no effect on the game but then I also see specific suits that seem to be GÇÿrace orientedGÇÖ and IGÇÖve read some things that suggest that there is benefit to choosing certain races.
Some skill building and battle guidance is greatly appreciated. |

Welcome. It gets better. And tougher ;) I recommend Ambush (it's Team Deathmatch) over Skirmish for newbies - latter is slightly more complex game mode.
I believe Dust University (name of the corp) is meant for new players, and there should be plenty of people willing to help.
Races don't matter. You can skill up to any racial suit you want, and even multiple ones - although I'd advice against that until you have one suit maxed (ie. level 5 proto suit with gear to match). In the beginning, save your Skill Points (SP), and don't use any until you're sure what you want. The only skills you should be spending on in the very beginning is Weaponry (not more than level 3, though) and Dropsuit Command (same). After those it gets more complicated and specialized, and you should wait until you understand the rather complex skill system better.
The secret to surviving in Dust as a newbie is in specialization. If you want to try out different aspects of the game, don't be afraid to start alts - they are free, and you can delete alts which you don't like.
You can also post specific questions on this forum, or search for answers. |

Thank you Arram, I made the mistake of using some of my SP last night in a 'shotfew in the dark' sort of way so when I play next I'm gonna terminate and recreate. Start over more or less and then Ill look up that faction you suggested.
When I am in the academy, can I.choose which game type I am entering? |

Hmm, good question. I haven't tried the new player experience in Uprising - will do so this weekend. When you're out of the academy, you have a list of game types on your Instant Battle screen: Ambush, Ambush OMS (Ambush v2), Skirmish, Domination (Skirmish v2). If you don't see them, I guess you can't :( |

You don't have to terminate. You can ask for a one-time respec until May 31 (you petition and the respec will come at some point). Don't let the accumulated SP go to waste (unless you know you will cap out, then you will have wasted about 24,000 SP of passive).
Trying out different fits, weapons, and modules is a good call. Use militia if you can to get a feel for the item. For the items that don't have militia variants, putting in skill level I is enough to get you in the STD version of the item. |

Wouldnt making a new char be almost like a respec??? Or am I missing something? Since the OP (and I) just started out, we wil only loose the passive SP wich isnt much for a day or two... or am I wrong?
(I have made a couple mistakes, and was planning to make new char) |

I put in a ticket to respec. I just need to make sure I get it right this time lol. Despite my desire to be a sniper is it easier to 'be'pass something else starting out? Or should I just up all out sniper mode and learn? |

My suggestion make a alt and skill into sniper rifles and buy militia suits that way u can test the gun and different suits without fear in case you decide its not for u I make alts to test a new gun or suit before I decide to commit on my main |

No.
The game uses some of your stats to determine if you are a n00b (not sure which ones). If it thinks you are - and it thinks you need more practice - it puts you in the academy. You'll fight other n00bs there and won't get slaughtered by people in very awesome expert gear and maxed out skills.
Once you get better, it will let you get into those other games (but it won't let you play in the academy anymore).
Someone told me that if your stats drop again you can get sent to the minors (the academy) again.
I hope this helps,

- Welcome to DUST.
- One day maybe they will unlock the door in your quarters, but for now they only let you out to fight. Makes one feel like they are under house arrest. Only let out to work.
- BojoGÇÖs School of the Trades and DUST University are two Corporations that take in new players and help them learn the game.
- Use the Starter Assault Sniper fit for now. It is free. Put your skill points into the skills that give you +5% max Shields and +5% max Armour. Then start putting points in other core skills. For now you can crouch (triangle) to reduce weapon sway on the sniper rifle, so you donGÇÖt need to skill into it right away. DonGÇÖt put points into the Dropsuit skills until you have a good base in the Dropsuit Upgrade skill section.
- Race has no effect. Any Race can use any other RaceGÇÖs suits.
- For snipping see my guide: The Role of the Sniper |

I'm in the same boat. I want everything. I have no idea what I want to be when I grow up. (SP wise)
I play COD. I run on kids and make them cry and throw controllers. Switching back to a more team / obj type of FPS game isn't bad - I enjoyed killzone 2/3. And I'm doing OK in the combat portion of the game most of the time. I've had some matches where I lemming an obj while my entire team thinks sniping is the way to play. (And subsequently get wrecked)
I thought I wanted to be a Scout class with a side of heavy AR specialty. Hit quick, hit medium hard, and be fast so I can rush rush rush obj's.
I'm worried about where that is going to land me though. I'm going to be weak and need to end engagements VERY quickly and I don't know if the AR will do it. Been using starter medium frames with an AR / SMG / Medic and after reviewing HP's of those compared to what I think I want to do...
I'm concerned I'm going to end up fast but still confined to medium / short range fights and just get out tanked by most guys. I built one fit with the GK38 AR and that small bump alone was giving me a tangible edge compared to the militia AR. But it was still built on a medium frame suit - and cutting the HP in half... I'm afraid of being a paper tiger with dull teeth.
Throughout my gaming I have learned to use just about any kind of weapon and build a class to make it work. This is extremely unfamiliar territory though, and the amount of time it would require to build out a few top tier fits - only to find my 'theory' was complete idiocy... makes me really nervous about where to spend those precious SP.
I blew all mine already on dropsuit / and the assault rifle tree. Almost enough to unlock the tier that will open up the scout suit / and then just a little to get that open. I have a few million ISK. Just been banking everything I can running the starter fits. Will probably respec. But I don't want to respec and make similarly dumb choices.
Is there anything that explains the skill tree in explicit noob / knuckle dragging moron / detail? I need clarity on the training cost multipliers. If I raise the base skill does it drop the following tree's training cost at all? I was talking to a kid (in game) and he said no. And I need a good break down of what race / sub race that explains how that effects dropsuits and gear. What I've read thus far is that it doesn't greatly effect it. But if it does at all where do I find that information? |

Most Scouts use the Shot gun or Nova Knives. When I played Scout I used SMG. I have seen Scouts using Assault Rifle and I think that is a reasonable way to go, especially if you are an ex COD player and can consistently shoot people in the head.
I would go one level into light frame suits and use the basic light frame suit to make your Scout fit. Then put points into the Core skills in Dropsuit Upgrades. These make a big difference. Once you get your core skills up, then skill up for better suits.
For people without much FPS experience I usually advise tank over gank, but if you are good at FPS you might want to put points into your chosen weapon early.
Use Show Info and check what bonuses skills give you.
The Scout is more squishy than last build, but the main defense of the Scout was always to avoid getting hit in the first place. People say that the Scout is balanced around stuff that had not been added to the game yet, so they feel a little weak now. Things like cloaking devices are coming in the future.

Coming from a Scout main, don't.
It really just isn't worth it right now. You may have good aim, but unless you stay out of sight almost 100% of the time, you're going to die A LOT.
That said, Tactical Assault Rifle is OP anyway, so you'll probably get tons of kills if that's what you're using. But be prepared to die a lot.
