I was honestly surprised by the lack of trophies after the official launch as well, since this is very much NOT a mini, and so technically is required to have trophies (I'd have to double-check, but DC Universe Online is free-to-play as well with microtransactions, and I'm pretty sure it has trophies; think that's Sony-published though, so that could explain it having them in spite of a possible non-requirement).
I also agree with the couple posts about higher priorities: there are more important things to worry about for the time being rather than implementing some tracking for non-stat-based triggers (a lot of stats are tracked server-side for demographic and balance purposes, but there's no way to know if anything is tracked client-side rather than just displayed based on the server response for the calls they've so far implemented.)
I also think that we SHOULD have trophies. Yes, they're not really a significant thing, but they are something fun to strive for and show off. On the PS3, even more so than the 360, they do provide a sense of progression of a totally non-important type, since you can see how many platinum, gold, silver, and bronze trophies someone has unlocked, and their "star level" based on totals.
The critical things with trophies in any online game, though, are what you give them for. It's absolutely essential that they be EXCLUSIVELY for things that you would do anyway, or things that help the team win the match. Killstreak trophies (x kills without dying), accuracy trophies (X% accuracy for a match), x kills with y weapon (as opposed to just "x kills total" which is fine), all encourage behaviours that are detrimental to the team's victory. They encourage people to engage in non-optimal strategies to unlock trophies. You see people going an entire match using nothing but knives to try to unlock the knife trophy, or people that find one afk guy, fire one shot, then AFK the rest of the match for the 100% accuracy trophy. These are the dangers, and one must be cautious to avoid them. Lifetime totals that are not specific to what YOU equip and use are essential (by all means, have the "kill one of every dropsuit" trophy, but DO NOT have a "get x kills WITH y dropsuit in one match"). |
