Might be a newb question, but:
1) Is it viable to spec a character into a Scout dropsuit AND an Assault dropsuit? I'd like to have a character that can switch between both of these roles and have max abilities, not run around gimped.
2) With another character I'd do the same, but with different roles: Assault dropsuit / Sentinel.
Thanks for the advice. |

It would take a long time if you are new. I would suggest picking one role to start. But people probably have success spreading SP thin so... |

Thanks for the question. I was wondering something similar.
Has anyone had a combination of specing into two roles they think works well? Not trying to hijack the thread but I have not seen any discussion of people talking about multi-class merc creation, except for specing into all the dropsuit pre-req skills. |

I would focus one one first. The SP/leveling system in this game is a long long long mind numbing grind...better to be really good at one thing as fast as possible...otherwise you will be prolonging the pain. |

A lot of skills cross over, but frame skills are frame skills. If you want to be a maxed out scout and heavy, you will need a lot of SP. |

Tin pup spoon (Iron wolf saber) said he put one level into every thing (which doesn't even make sense)
Of course he is a bag of fail so there is that. |

Ahki - First of all, you should be having fun. If your definition of fun is pub stomping with a squad, then specialize in one thing only. If you play lone wolf, you will survive better and have more gameplay options if you go assault, but train a couple different weapons to advanced proficiency. You need to be able to adapt to changing battlefield conditions. You also will help your team if you can use drop uplinks and participate in AV when tanks get dropped in. Another advantage of assault is you can easily branch into logi if you choose later
The way I did things was by not training any Dropsuit skills. I experimented with starter fits, and bought a Merc pack for the dragonfly scout suit. I beefed up core skills and selected my favorite weapons. I see you are Gallente like me. That means your starter suits have 3 low slots. Gallente has the best starter suit layout because you can use biotics upgrades and fit a basic tank. Minmatar, for example, gets 3 high slots and no lows. Try out the militia weapons, play assault and scout. Decide what you like best, then start investing in Dropsuit skills. |

You can train both, they overlap core skills and weapons.
It will take a lot of sp, I would suggest training one then the other. If you don't do corp matches or pc you could probably stop training first suit type at lv3 to unlock adv or lv4 to get the most of the passive bonus.
Training both skills to lv4 is the same sp as one to lv5, so don't go level 5 till other is 3-4 unless you really want to use the protosuit. To get both suits proto you are looking at about 7.5 million sp in suit skills alone.
Some weapons work well with lv1 trained, others need several levels to be effective, you will have to be careful in your choices to be effective in with suits spreading sp out.
Don't train to lv5 unless you need to for a unlock you will use or to get the next skill you need. Once both suit skills are leveled up go back and get the lv5 skills then.
I can be done, but will require more planning then running one suit type. If you spend to many points in one area it won't ruin anything, will just take longer to max. |

It will take at least 15 mil sp to do this effectively, especially if you want to be competitive for the high level stuff like Planetary Conquest.
Once you get your core skills maxed out for one role, that will translate to another role.(unless you're thinking going ground/vehicle, that will require 2x the amount of sp)
So get your first suit to adv level at least, your core skills (pg, cpu, shields, armor, kin cats for fast roles) to lvl 5, and your proto gun. Then get adv suit #2. Then pick which on to take to proto first. Get that role really good. Then put work in on another one.
Everyone will be doing this eventually. Vet's have between 8 mil and 14 mil sp. And most of them have sunk ALL that sp into filling one role as perfectly as they can. Maxing out your AR can take a loooong time. Making the perfect frontline AR guy takes even longer.
Skills in this game work on a system of diminishing returns. But it's also a game where every % counts. It takes a LOT of SP to get a skill from lvl 4 to lvl 5, enough to get another skill to lvl 4, but that small increase to a skill can be the difference between life and death, victory and defeat.
THIS is the true game of Dust 514. |

Advanced dropsuits are good enough for most situations and it will require less SP to unlock advanced Scout and advanced Assault than to go proto in one of them so it is perfectly doable. |
