I'd like to point something out... The Call of Duty series goes back to 2003, with a WW2 shooter. In essence, CoD is a franchise with a large, well-known publisher, and a relatively long lifespan already. It has a pre-existing fanbase stretching back to PS2, and Battlefield stretches back to 2002, with Battlefield 1942. Both franchises have had a huge advertising budget spent on each of them, along with a large fanbase who will buy into the games already. Also, due to the large fanbase, gathering more fans (up to a certain point) is exponential due to word-of-mouth. You're more likely to play a game a friend has recommended than a game you've heard about from the TV. In essence, 9k on release weekend for a little-known shooter with barely any advertising, no pre-existing fanbase and a barely known developer is pretty good. I think Super MNC hit 10k max, and it had a predecessor in MNC, which was fairly popular.
I'd like to point out that CCP has advertised to some 50 million plus people. Dust is currently on the What's New area when you turn your PS on, twice, and is billed as NEW. You argument holds no water when you speak purely on an advertising basis. Furthermore, Dust has been advertised ever since it went into open beta and actually was advertised during the later part of closed beta. There has been plenty of advertising for Dust. Not in the traditional sense, no, but advertising nonetheless. Everyone who owns a PS3 has at the very least seen the Dust Tile on their PS3. And at no time since Open Beta has there been 50 million players playing Dust, much less 100K. So 9K is low for Dust compared to the number of people who have at least seen the Dust Tile.
However, I agree that the real issue is that CCP is comparatively a small company who does everything in house. They don't have big backers like EA or Ubi who have deep pockets. Additionally, EvE has only been advertised on a large scale, once in 10 years, that I can remember, so while MMO gamers may be familiar with EvE, many console players got their first look into when Dust was announced. So as a developer with a 10 year old game, you are right CCP isn't well known across the board when it comes to gamers.
