The difference between the standard tier plasma cannon and the prototype variant (Which is supposed to be an improvement over vanilla variants in "every aspect that counts" is according to the market only different by about 100 or so direct hit damage points, and maybe a slight splash damage increase. Also possibly an ammo increase, but I can't remember. Charge times, reload speed and splash range remain exactly the same.
I don't know if it's bugged or if this difference translate to something much greater than I imagine it does on paper, but it seems as though it would be an absolute waste to skill into the higher tiers of plasma cannons. Any CCP affiliates know anything about it? |

Agreed. I think I'll spec into militia just so I can grief protobears by one-shotting them. |

Yeah, I get lazy with the vernacular sometimes. You're correct on both points. |

Hopped onto my alt to dump all of my SP into plasma cannons to see if the prototypes were any better than the standard tiers. Spoiler alert: They absolutely were not.
The assault suit I was using with the default plasma cannon had 352 EHP. Firing directly at my feet on the ground with the default cannon left me with just 53 armor remaining.
The assault suit I was using with the prototype plasma cannon had 352 EHP. Firing directly at my feet on the ground with the prototype cannon left me with 28 armor remaining.
In short, the prototype tier cannon does approximately 324 maximum splash damage without damage modifying skills or modules, whereas the default tier cannon does approximately 299 maximum splash damage under the same conditions. As anyone with a basic understanding of both Dust and elementary school level arithmetic would tell you, this difference is absolutely minimal.
I also was able to confirm that the charge speed, reload time, ammo count, projectile movement speed, projectile arc angle and blast radius were either exactly the same or similar to be distinguishable in any meaningful way.
tl;dr the stats are correct as displayed on the market. The prototype plasma cannon is indeed almost exactly the same as the standard tier plasma cannon. Do NOT waste your SP on anything but the most basic plasma cannon.
To be honest, of all the things I've seen this is one of the more disappointing. Why release a new weapon if it's not only nonviable as a class but doesn't change as you spend time, SP and money to move into the higher tiers? |
