So last night I made a rather heat of the moment post about blueberries not playing the objective. Mike Poole made a rather brash comment about my post. But the underlying message of the comment was clear. In less brash terms he basically stated that my post of full of acronyms that some people may not understand. So after sleeping on it and with a cooler head, I decided to make an attempt at constructing a New Player Guide. In part because over the last week or so there has been an increase in player count and it's possible and even likely that at least some of these players are new to Dust. So without further adieu:
ACRONYMS and WORD MEANINGS:
- PTFO - Play the F'ing objective
- SR - Scrambler Rifle
- PC - Planetary Conquest (A specific game mode in Dust)
- FW - Faction Warfare (Another game mode in Dust)
- AR - Assault Rifle
- HMG - Heavy Machine Gun
- Logi - Logistics Class
- TAC - Refers to a specific Sub-class of weapon (Such as TAC AR or TAC SR)
- Pub - Public Matches which are all the Instant Battle Game Modes
- SP - Skill Points
- ISK - In-Game Currency used to buy weapons, mods, drop suits, and skillbooks
- AUR - Aurum, an alternate type of currency that can only be acquired by spending real currency in the Playstation Store
- Booster - Refers to both the active and passive boosters that are used to increase SP gain.
- WP - Warpoints, obtained during a match for killing other players, taking objectives, and taking battlefield assets
- CRU - A respawn point in a match represented on your map by a symbol that looks like 3 people standing together
- KDR - Kill/Death Ratio, simply a measurement used to determine the number of kills a player has versus the number of deaths.
- Stat Padding - Any method used to obtain a higher stat rating by means of exploits or game mechanics not being applied correctly.
- Pub Stomping - refers to veterans players going into Pub matches to beat up on new or inexperienced players
- Academy - a specific type of game mode meant to help new players learn the controls and basic mechanics of Dust
- Orbital Bombardment - an attack where a squad leader can call in a massive strike from space, usually results in all players open to the attack being killed
- OHK - One Hit Kill, anytime that one player can kill another player that has full health, with one shot. Generally referring to snipers or sniper rifles.
- DS3 - Dual Shock Controller, refers to the PS3 controller
- CPM - Council of Planetary Management, a group of players who represents the interest of all Dust players too CCP.
- CCP - The company that makes both Dust 514 and EvE Online
- Proto - Refers to Prototype gear. Prototype gear is the highest level of gear a player can currently obtain.
- Adv - Refers to Advance gear. Advance gear is the second highest gear level a player can currently obtain.
This list is not all inclusive, but these are the terms that you are most likely to see here on the forums or hear in game.
Important DS3 buttons to remember:
- L1 - Scope/Zoom button
- R1 - Weapon Trigger
- L3 - Sprint Button
- L2 - Throw Grenade
- R2 - Switch Weapons
Those 5 buttons are by far the most important to remember. They'll save your life.
Basic Information that all players should know:
- In a skirmish match, you have to PTFO. Turning objectives is just as, if not more, important than killing the other team.
- Unless you are a sniper, keep moving. A stationary player is a dead player.
- Remember to always join a squad. In a squad, all players contribute to the accumulation of WP, which can be used by the squad leader to call in an Orbital Strike.
- Remember to reload your weapon, preferably after each time it is fired.
- In addition to the rule above, keep an eye on your ammo remaining. While being shot at, is a bad time to run out of ammo.
- Be a team player. The lone gunner does not win matches in Dust.
- Learn the Mechanics of your chosen class. Ask in game or in the forums, but learn it.
- Points for second place is only awarded in game. Your peers will show you no such favor.
There are literally dozens upon dozens of things that new players should know. But what this guide is attempting to do is provide you with basic information to help you survive your first few days in Dust. The playerbase of Dust are a highly competitive group of people. They will not have any issues with yelling at you, calling you names, or calling you out on the forums. If you can't play Dust, your peers will make sure that everyone knows it. If you are an elite player and consistently top the killboards, your peers will do everything possible to crush you, both in game and in the forums. There is no situation in which you are ever going to be a winner in the eyes of your peers. You need to have thick skin and quick trigger finger.
Dust is not for everyone, it is not your general run of the mill FPS game and your actions or inactions can ripple through New Eden like a Tsunami. Dust is a complex game that is a lot more than just what it appears to be on the surface. Future plans for Dust are for Dust players to make a big impact in New Eden, effecting both Dust and EvE Online in ways that has never been done before in any game to date.
With all this said, I invite other veteran players to offer suggestions for this guide. New players, please ask us anything in the forums or on comms in game. Yes we are brash, arrogant, stubborn, and just general buttholes, but if you tell us you're a new player, there is not one person here who will not attempt to answer your question to the best of his/her ability. |

Hopefully this ends up really helping. The game is complicated as hell for the new player, especially if you are not familiar with EVE. Good luck and great thing to do.
Be well. |

Nice guide, but most new players will look at the forums first as their source for information, if they fail there then they go elsewhere, but the nice thing about the wiki is that it is more comprehensive than I can possibly do on the forums. So I will link it as well. As I think that many new players can benefit from comprehensive guides as well, for more in depth knowledge. Thanks for the response.

you might want to add some common chat abbreviations
IE:
LFS - looking for squad rf(#) - room for (# number of open slots in squad) rf(#)m - room for (# number of open slots in squad) more QQ - crying o/ - wave o7 - salute ect. |

Greetings and Salutations, I'm new to DUST myself. However, after several games in the training grounds I've started to notice a trend amongst a majority of my fellow newbies. They really have no situational or tactical awareness. Which leads me to ask a question of them, "Are you new to FPS game-play in general?" If so than it's understandable, I've always been of the opinion that ignorance should be corrected not punished. So I figure it would be a good idea to give a short run down of sound tactical advice, Here it goes. Bulletin Style.
1) Do not just stand around looking at how pretty the sky is, at best you are going to get shot, at worst you will get someone else shot.
2) When hacking or taking an objective do not just run up to it. Find a blind spot and crouch in close, if possible get on top of the objective and crouch down, most people only check their horizontal axis.
3) When deciding to engage in a firefight ask yourself these three questions, 1. How many of them are there? Don't assume that just because you only see one that there is only one. Wait a beat and track your target, a little patience usually won't get you killed, the lack of it will. 2. Where is my team? Even if you think your safe, unless your a bad ass ninja which, if your reading this for advice you aren't, don't take the risk. DUST unlike most games of this type has consequences for dieing. The more you die the more you WILL die and it just isn't worth it. So don't take the risk unless it's negligible, really negligible. 3. What kind of heat is your target packing? If you see a rocket launcher just walk away unless you can get right on top of him. Snipers are less effective at close range as well. Shotguns should be taken at a distance, and assault rifles are always a toss up.
4) Passion is the enemy of precision. It's easy to get over excited and loose focus, keep calm and carry on. The more excited you are the worse your aim will be.
5) Which leads us to aiming. Turn your x and y sensitivity up ALL the way. If it seems intimidating at first that's ok, you will adjust I promise. Once that's done you need to learn how to move properly. Practice sliding around corners, jumping off of obstacles while pulling 180 degree turns, aim at arbitrary points and try to stay tracked on it while maneuvering. The biggest help you can be to your self in this area is simply to get comfortable with your movement doing so will allow you to strafe circles around your targets instead of just running in a straight line at them.
6) If you didn't already know, you don't have to use the default controller config. Get into the settings and see what works best for you, personally I like to have R3 set for crouch.
If you can't tell the numbers are arbitrary, I'm just writing this as it comes to mind.
7) Don't just shoot at people just because you see them, wait until you have a real shot. Firing to early will cause minimal damage while alerting them to your presence, which will almost inevitably lead to an ambush situation. So wait until your sure of a clean kill, if you can't be then don't engage.
8) Stick to walls and constantly check behind you, any time you run past somewhere there might be someone hiding, check it out. Chances are if they are waiting to ambush you they can't take your assault rifle up close and personal.
9) Yes snipers are cool but most people can't shoot to save their lives, literally. Play at your skill level, start small and work your way up to the more "interesting" weapon selections.
10) As previous stated by the progenitor of this thread, PTFO. Failing to do so will accomplish nothing but pissing everyone off and costing you the match. Be smart, if you don't know where to go just follow the largest group of people you see. Everyone wants to be a Hero but it's fire superiority that is going to win matches, and it's backing your team up that is going to earn you respect.
I hope this helps somebody out otherwise I just wasted my time. |

Random tip for KB/M users: TURN OFF MOUSE SOOTHING. If you don't, your aiming speed is as quick as a turtle. Put your sensitivity to 90. I don't recommend 100 because it literally spazzes all over the place. |

@Xellos Alerian, good points to make and don't worry about hi-jacking the thread, the point is to give new players solid "non-political" advice about playing Dust and playing FPS games. As I said in my OP, there are a ton of things I could add, but I'm trying to apply the KISS rule here so that new players aren't overwhelmed all at once. That being said, there is more to be said to new players so the more info that can be passed, the better. |
