Missile Turrets on Dropships are the face roll.
Here is my thought process behind it:
Have an Infantry Problem? Throw Rockets at it! Decent Splash Radius - Can OHK most things in 1 hit, or -2 to 3 on a Prototype Suit - No overheat!
Have an Installation Problem? Throw Rockets at it! Installations have low shielding (except for those fecking CRUs) and Explosive damage really hurts armor. Steady damage output = one dead installation.
Have a Tank Problem? Throw Rockets at it! Armor tanks WILL get facerolled with some direct Prototype Accelerated Missile Launcher Hits. Shield tanks will hold for as long as their reps hold out and once their shields go down, they WILL explode with 1-2 hits. A dropship can just park above them and to the left or right outside of their firing range and shoot at will. They MIGHT hit you with their top small turret, but 9 out of 10 times, your damage > than theirs.
Have a Dropship problem? Throw Rockets at it! Same idea as with tanks, but with the difficulty of hitting a faster target. Gallente Dropships will be hurting badly from from rocket hits, and once Caldari ones lose their shields, they are squishy squishy.
Also, RANGE. The rockets can hit target well inside the red line (especially their damnable turret installations) and save yourself unnecessary pain.
So, don't you see? Small Railguns and Blasters are the fail.
You have to have godly skills to nail anything with the railgun. Against installations, they are not so great against. Why? Overheat and the damage type is not great against armor. Against infantry, their radius of damage is too small and the need to be pinpoint is too high. Also, you tend to overheat before you hit anything.
Blasters are better than rails but do not cover the wide breadth of usefulness that a rocket turret will cover. A prototype blaster will mow through infantry like a boss, but it will not do the necessary damage to take out installations, it will not take out tanks, and the range is sadly pathetic.
So, next time you consider what turrets to stick on your Dropship, go rockets all the way. |
