Worse flight controls then chromosome: check
HP lowered while other vehicles got a buff: check
Missle turrets are now hitting dropship as well as wonky assault turret: check
Still enable to get decent amount of WP as a pilot: check
Free meta lvl 1 Forge gun kill: check
I really want to fully spec into dropships but am afraid I'm just going to waist skill points and a tremendous amount of isk. I want to support my team in the air but not if I'm going to be a flying plate for everyone to see and say " oh look an easy kill, let me get my lvl.1 AV weapon out after I die. Proto AV should take out militia dropships in 2 hits, not the other way around.
Don't.
I say this as one of the biggest advocates for pilots.
The dropship is a tool in Uprising, it's not a career. It's as if a carpenter were to decide he was going to make the hammer his career. There just isn't enough you can do to support your team to use it full time, and you need to use other tools too.
The only team supporting role at present is acting as transport for the initial objective rush. After that you need to be a slayer (Assault) or medic(Logi). Those are the only two viable roles at present, so don't gimp them by putting too many points into flying. You can get away with a Militia ship, an AB, and perhaps a MCRU for special occasions.
None of the other DS missions are viable at present. Remote reps, gunship, recon, are all months from being viable and even further away from being more important than Assault or Logi.
Use the cheap ships when you need them, then put them or throw them away and continue killing or healing.
A few months to a year and we may see a change where it makes sense to skill more deeply into dropships once again. In the meantime don't frustrate yourself by making it the only thing you can do or you will be like a carpenter who can only hammer. |

I'm not giving up, don't get me wrong. I'm just adapting to the current reality in the New Eden way.
I am still rewriting my dropship guide for Uprising and I will still use dropships where and when they are useful. I am just not going to try to make them do things they are not capable of at this time. You wouldn't use a hammer to cut boards or drive screws, and you shouldn't use the current dropship to remote repair HAVs or play gunship. It would work out just about as well.
I will also continue to advocate for all the changes we need.
But given the timeframe involved I'm going to earn my SP and ISK as a Logi. I'll save my SP for dropships once I get that fitting polished, and I think I'll be ready to reskill into flying by the time the necessary changes are in place. |

It doesn't do any good if everything gets band-aided now to a slower bleeding state when the more focused balanced changes can simply undo all of these quick patches. Trust me there is going to be changes and what is in store is simply not ready for reviewing yet because the picture is so incomplete. Once it is in a good enough state I trust CCP will be sharing their thoughts with you on advancing the entire balance 'table' forward. On we know, blam gave us some hints a week or two ago, some really cool looking stuff coming, and I fully understand that CCP is still working out how these things will work and how they'll fit into the big picture, but until then dropships will continue to be the white elephant of dust. It's just that I and I'm sure many other pilots chose flying as our path in dust because it was a challenging, fun, and rarely trodden path, but the simple fact is flying makes me more angry than anything else, I'm actually given serious thought as to whether or not it's worth it for me to continue flying. If the fact that one of the most well known pilots in dust is saying they're not worth it as present doesn't tell you something about the state of dropships, I don't know what else does.
Don't give up, just don't limit yourself to flying.
I'm sure you had a backup day job befrore, just like I had Logistics. Make that your main SP investment so you can still play and have fun while dropships are worked on. I think it's going to take a while too, because it's not just the mechanics or even the reward system that needs to be addressed, it's also the fundamental game that is going to have to change. It has to create true missions for the dropship where none exist now. At the moment the dropship is a solution in search of a problem.
The issue is the current game play requires only two roles, slayer and healer. There are no tactical challenges that would require a tool like the dropship to solve. CCP will require time to develop game modes that can truly make use of this wonderful tool.
We won't be playing mindless Ambush or Brownian motion Skirmish forever.
