Since I've picked this thing up I've gotten some 50 or so kills using just the Plasma Cannon.
All of them were infantry.
Save one occasion where I shot at a Militia tank and hit it's rear which dropped it down to about 60% armor and it quickly repped it back with a Heavy repairer. Thank god I stocked up on the Hacked AV Grenades.
So, what do you think it's better at? |

Was it a Soma/CreoDron HAV? Because I'm pretty sure the Plasma Cannon hits harder against shields than armour.
So... basically a reverse Swarm Launcher. |

I managed to destroy some LAVs with them, but seems more useful for infantry. I don't really mind that anyway since I think its pretty balanced as an anti-infantry weapon. There is no way this weapon can compete against the lockon ability of swarm launchers, so it makes sense to have it as an anti-infantry mostly weapon instead. |

Anti-infantry if you can land a direct hit you can one shot anyone however its useless against HAV's as it takes so many shots unless its a crap fit, useless against dropships because they just have to fly a little higher and you cant hit them due to the arc or they can dodge easy, on the plus side if a LAV is trying to run you over you can easily hit it but it will just keep going or turn round and drive off while you reload. |

The rounds seem slow and easy to evade, I have not used one but I think it could use some speed or be able to fire twice before reloading. Again, I haven't used it but it does seem slow. |

It has definatly been brought back to useability as a anti infantry weapon, for a little bit it was practically useless in that department from whining... I hope that's not really the purpose of this thread to do again.. I only have a skinweave heavy and militia forge with dmg mod and militia cardio thing for stamina, with this I went 22 kills, 18 assists and 8 deaths the other day.. 6 of those kills were proto type heavies blasted right in the face close range as they came around corners, 2 tanks and a dropship.. it's a wonderful weapon, can't wait for the day I actually have enough skillpoints to finish assault rifles and skill up for better forge |

AntiVehicle I have been using this gun all day and I love it. You can't really use it like a forge gun. Fighting dropships is delicate work, you have to lead a lot more and make sure you are aiming for tailfins. Against tanks, I think it is meant to be used in conjunction with grenades. For example, if you used all your nades and you need one more shot. Against LAV it is really tricky. With the vehicle hp buffs and the loss of weaponry buff we cannot oneshot kill LAVS. My packed exo does a much better job. It makes a good support fire weapon against vehicles, but you just can't count on one by itself to do the job, a pair of plasma launcher gives me goosebumps.
AntiInfantry Again, we cannot think of this like a forgegun or grenade launcher. I think of it like a shotgun. Be fast an agile, pop in fast and hop around, shoot at point blank. Make sure to hop when you shoot. This is important for 2 reasons, first is if you are in the air and the projectile denonates on the ground the splash will have less chance of hitting you while the downward vantage increase you chances of a direct hit, second if people see you jump they know you are about to shoot so they might jump too and when they do they are easier to hit because they can no longer control their movement airborne.
Definitely use peekaboo tactics. If you miss, you need to get to cover immediately or swap to smg. If it is multiple opponents, you will need to have an exit strategy planned.
Build Caldari assault. Period. There is no other viable option. Plasma is a hybrid weapon and caldari assault give 2% to reload speed per level for a possible 25% bonus to reload speed. From 3.5 to 2.4 seconds. With plasma operation maxed we are looking at a possible 2.8 seconds per shot AFTER THE FIRST. Giving it a constant fire rate of 2.8 which is approximately 1/3 the rate of a shotgun. |

If you spec into nanocirc you don't have to worry about armor or repairers, just use k17 hives. Go with kinetic catalyzers and cpu mods in low and 3 extenders and a dmg mod in high. Flaylock is a good side arm companion, flux is also nice. Thesemmakengreat splash kill combo weapons. This build is great for folks that cant aim
Dunno what kind of Dropship pilots you're aiming at dude, any pilot worth their salt keeps mobile and flies high to avoid things like this. The fact that the weapon is dumb-fire and has an arch (so stupid) makes it impractical for aiming at airborne targets.
As far as HAVs, I doubt even two plasma cannons could do much against it by themselves what with the Heavy Armor Repairer's capabilities and Shield Tanking usually means they're going to move fast enough to get out of range anyway. Grenades are a much more logical choice as they don't have the ridiculously long reload speed for the single shot weapon.
Now, I've got a long winded thread about Starter LAVs and their 2000 EHP since the vehicle buff, so I won't get into that. Suffice to say, it's BS. Your free LAV versus my Prototype Plasma Cannon that's already hell to aim at fast moving targets? Mine should -DEFINITELY- one hit kill.
As far as the build, I've sacrificed the reload speed for the Gallente Assault Suit's reduction in the DRASTIC CPU COSTS (3x more than a Swarm Launcher, which has more rounds in the mag, more damage - assuming all missiles hit - and lock on capabilities) so that I can actually fit some survival tools like a sidearm and nanohives. Nothing better than shaving off 30 CPU on that thing, opens up a lot of options.
To each their own, I suppose. I honestly feel that the weapon itself costs more skill than it rewards. If you miss, you might not get another opportunity to fire - and the fact that it's dumbfire with an incredibly slow projectile makes this weapon underpowered.

Well I have managed to take out 2 HAV's with it, the first was a railgun tank that decided to enter the city on one of the maps I hit it twice and took out its shields and I kept dodging behind a crate and the driver couldn't seem to aim, The driver jumped out for some bizarre reason when he still had full armour and took a PC round to his face I could have hacked it but the game was nearly over so I carried on shooting it and it took another 2 shots to take out his armour (sica btw.)
The second was a guy who managed to somehow beach his madrugar and I stood next to a supply depot plinking away at it, I started firing at it when its shields were gone and it had 3/4ths armour and it took 6 shots.
I am getting better with the plasma cannon and I like it I think of it as an AV MD its not as effective AV as swarms are but it works and its not as effective AI as a MD but it works (especially if you land a direct hit.) So I sort of use it as a general purpose weapon 1 tool for everyjob kind of gun, sadly though this seems to burn through hives alarmingly fast. |

I honestly think CCP needs to stop putting out gimmicky weapons and start putting out a decent basic line of weapons. Both the flaylock pistol and plasma cannon are just weird weapons where, in a practical real-world sense would really not have any use at all. Why do I need a flaylock pistol when I already have a grenade? Why do I need a plasma cannon when it's bulky and only gets one shot? I'm not coming down on those who choose to use the flaylock or plasma cannon, and I'm sure people can use them quite well in some instances and have a lot of fun with them, but in the end shock troops and heavier troops need guns that mimic assault rifles, submachine guns, rocket launchers, grenade launchers and pistols in order to form an effective assault. That's honestly why I think the scrambler rifle was by far the best addition in the full release.
Now, for real ideas, if the plasma cannon was turned into something more like a mortar or artillery, that would be cool. It'd need a way to deploy it on the ground and target troops in various areas, and of course it would need a certain range put on it, but that would definitely make it a much more practical weapon, and a lot of fun too. The counter is simply, just use snipers, but a mortar or artillery weapon could make it so that those hardened targets that the other team tends to form where it's nigh impossible to take will actually have a weakness. |

people In Our World use weapons like AR, SMG, etc.
having alternate weapons systems is never a bad idea. The diversity allows far greater creative potential.
Knowing CCP this iteration of the PCan will be improved upon.
It does need greater projectile velocity, and like all the weapons systems with AoE potential could benefit the user by larger Clip Size or spare ammo or less nanite cost from nanohives... but that could be bias on my part. |

Quite the contrary, most infantry-based AV weapons in real life are shoulder-mounted, bulky and single fire.......

You are all just making this way over complicated.
It's meant to destroy shields. It does something like 150% of its base damage to shields and 80% base damage to armor. So if its damage is 1000 it will do 1500 to shields. However it will only do 800 to armor.
Swarm launchers are the reverse 150% to armor 80% to shields.
So yes the Gallente ARMOR TANKS will laugh at you as they run you over for lawls. The Caldari shield tank however will get hit and **** itself in fear. More then likely trying to run.
Shield tanks are the blueish tinted ones that look like their Chasis is slanted everywhere. Armor tanks are greenish and look round. |

As for the main topic here, I'd say they are intended as a cross, good for both not great for either. However after playing with them a lot they are absolutely not viable as AV, though somewhat viable as anti-infantry. |

It's a bazooka with great splash damage. I killed two targets with one hit firing mostly blind at great distance the way I usually use the MD.
I also got better one shot kills at point blank.
It works on vehicles. So it's for whatever will take damage.
It works best when you have an AR front moving forward and you can stay back and protected. |
