A weapon concept I've had for drones, essentially you paint your target with a gun and small drones would fly out and attack the target area. This would make a unique weapon based on what kind of range you give it and what kind of damage / area of effect it would have , these decisions could simple be variants of the weapon as well. It could be the competing weapon sitting next to snipers. It could prevent passive regeneration as well as small constant damage, it would effect vehicles as well. This would fill the void in the game and lore dealing with the Gallante's high usage of drones. It would also upon up a whole new weapon type that would reap a lot in kill assists due to the large target area. |

In my head, I imagined thousands of micro drones who go to the target area which tear apart the enemies armor and shields on a cellular level (even preventing nanotechnology from working), which do slow constant damage in a large area of effect that cause slow damage over time and prevented regeneration, and the effects last even when you go out of the tiny drone area of effect for whatever duration. Functioning as an area denial weapon, if enemies are hiding in cover send out the microbe drone swarms to chase them out and gun them down. It would also prevent heals by the description of the weapons effect.
For a larger drone that helps fight or reps, or for something that distracts I would think an equipment slot would be better suited for that. |

It wouldn't do the damage you need to be a campers tool. The slow damage is not enough to kill with one shot or even repetitive shots due to running out of the AoE, its best used on those trench warfare situations between AR groups, to break the trench and get the assists for doing slow damage to a large group thus needing kill assists and not direct kills. |

I actually planned this as to not steal the roll of mass drivers. For an image of the weapons effects, think of 10 million flies buzzing around in a given area that persists for say 30 seconds that deal damage over time. These things are small and will slowly latch on to given droupsuits or vehicles and just start tearing it apart. People in their trench will either panic and run out this drone infestation or bear the burden of slow damage over time. You don't control these drones, they are automatic and have the 30 second lifespan.
To reiterate, this drone gun would shoot an area, and that area would be subject to causing enemy units to suffer slow damage if they walk in this swarm or cloud of drones. Mass drivers explode and the area of denial is over, this thing shoots an area and this micro drone swarm operates like a 30 second dust cloud. I also imaged that this weapon would have above average range considering that this weapon is not a major killer in and of itself.
I think this swarm idea for the gun is good because it still leaves space for a drone equipment item that the player can control which would be an entirely separate concept.
Edit:
Kind of like this in apperance, but smaller, and obviously not organic.

I don't see why not, if you are going to introduce a new weapon type, have different classes of it. The aoe swarm gun would have sniper range with area denial and the single target drone gun could have mid range and would distract targets.
Drones are good in general because they prevent the ww2 in space feeling by adding stranger concepts
