I ask this question, because it is clear that CCP has no idea.
They want the HMG to be a short range weapon, but this is simply not the role an HMG actually plays, and I feel is a major source of confusion about this weapon.
Let's take a general wikipedia definition of "Heavy Machine Gun."
"These weapons are designed to provide increased range, penetration and destructive power against vehicles, buildings, aircraft and light fortifications beyond the standard rifle calibers used in medium or general-purpose machine guns, or the intermediate cartridges used in light machine guns."
In other words, the HMG has longer range and more powerful rounds than a standard rifle.
Let's look at some RL numbers using the M2 Browning.
Effective range1,800 m (2,000 yd) Maximum range6,800 m (7,400 yd)
Odd....seems MUCH farther than 30m!!!
Obviously, CCP simply named their weapon wrong!
I suggest one of two things occur:
1) The HMG be re-named to the HTG - Heavy Trombone Gun
Follow me here......
This will be a gun with a barrel shaped like a trombone that fires musket balls rapidly. It will be VERY effective short range, swiss cheesing anyone in it's path, but after a short distance those musket balls have spread out so far, and have taken such curved paths, that they are all but ineffective in the rest of their travelling. That being said, occasionally someone behind the shooter should die from "The Happy Gilmore Effect."
2) The HMG retains it's name, but takes on the characteristics of an ACTUAL HMG.
I believe these changes would alleviate MUCH confusion. |

The heavy peashooter gun. Shoots hardened Chick peas that dissolve in mid air after around 30m.
AR could be the tic tac rifle, shoots minty feshness that goes bad after just a little farther than you can toss a football. |

TRUE DUDE....let's see what a minigun can do:
3,280 ft (1,000 m, 1,093 yd)
Yeah, it's still not right. |

I'm just saying that the confusion is coming from everyone wanting to take any suit in the game, insist that it should have its own unique role, and then insist that all of them should be able to fill the Assault role no matter how you fit them. |

So you want them to be true to real life? In RL HMG's are either stationary or vehicle mounted, not very many people can walk around shooting one. Now we can provide a bit of leeway because we're like 20,000 yrs in the future and we've got these spiffy dropsuits. Even then I doubt the little mobility heavy's have would be as much and would be nonexistent when actually firing the gun. |

good name, however a couple things do not add up.
One is that New Eden does not = RL.
Two is that if all the weapons had RL ranges, game would be broke and everyone could hit everything everywhere. Game would be broke. also railguns would destroy most of the known world
3 lore. Lorewise we are wearing VERY highly defensive armor systems and the projectiles may have to be moving so fast, or the plasma so heated, that after 50 M of air resistance or cooling they are indeed worthless. The weapon systems match this possible trend. |

You Sir, make a good point. We are getting closer to why this gun is so mis-named. And you just pointed something very important out: It's actually a minigun!
With these stats: 3,280 ft (1,000 m, 1,093 yd)
Def not the same range of say a .50 cal....but certainly longer than 30m, wouldn't you agree?
And oh look, it's a guy without a heavy suit firing a handheld minigun!!! It looks like one might be able to move around alright with that thing....
FFS, this gun is even more misnamed than I originally thought when I made the OP! |

Hmm, how about we pretend that after 30m our suits have had enough time to detect the incoming projectile and sufficiently modulate the shield harmonics so that it can be harmlessly deflected.
And made up science saves the day. |

UH-greed. But the language is the same. We can all agree that should make some sense, and therefore tie to reality.

This is true, but doesn't negate scalability.

And then how do you explain EVERY OTHER WEAPON?
Congrats, you have also come up with a more ridiculous workaround then simply making the guns work like every other game (i.e.,RL..if scaled a bit).
But to keep it on topic, I'm not asking (in this thread anyway) for a change to how the "HMG" works. I'm simply saying that CCP has no clue whatsoever what an HMG is, and that is apparent by the way they want it to work.
Ergo, we rename the CCP version The Heavy Trombone Gun!

CCP pretty much agrees - Gameplay > Realism. And don't care to make name changes.
Pretty much no weapon in this game can compare to reality. Grenade Launcher > MD's AR > M1A1> Real HMG > Dust HMG ect ect. |

I believe someone else pointed out that it was a minigun. And I can agree that the ranges are unrealistic,
One thing about that video though. The minigun in it is probably 1/3rd the size and possibly weight of the ones we have in game; also with it being so short it's center of balance would be completely different than the ones in game. So yeah could see people moving around with it. |
