Hey guys,
If you've played EVE, you can skip this part: EVE Online is entirely based on passive skill points. Rather than gaining skill points and then allocating them to a skill, you have what is called a skill queue. You make a list of skills, like so: Engineering IV
Light Missiles I
Shield Enhancements II
Each skill on this list takes a certain number of skill points, and because you are always gaining skill points this means each skill calculates how long it will take to complete. A level 1 skill might take like 7-30 minutes, L2 20m-1hr, L3 3h-1d, L4 1d-10d, and a level 5 can take anywhere from like 5 days to a month or so. You don't gain ANY skill points unless you have a skill on the list, meaning all skill points are immediately assigned to a skill (and yes, you can train a skill half way to the next level, but you won't gain any benefit in between levels). Lastly, any skills that start more than 24 hours out will be removed from the list. You could have a bunch of short skills that train for 20 hours and then end your queue with a skill that takes 15 days, you just can't put any skills after that 15 day skill.
If you've played EVE, skip to here: I'd like to adjust the skill queue to fit DUST. It would not affect the skill progression system in any way as it currently stands, it would simply be a tool for improving character planning (and keeping me from spending SP on impulsive ****). How it works is you would make a list of skills, and any skill points you generate would be automatically applied to the first skill in your list. When that skill reaches the level you specified, it is removed from the list, a notification is received (ex. "Vehicle Engineering IV has completed"), and any further SP is applied to the next skill in the list. You receive no bonuses until you've fully obtained the next level in the skill (no benefit from partially trained skills, Turret).
This system would NOT remove unallocated SP, if your list was empty you would continue to generate those points for spending on something else in the future. However, these unallocated SP could be paid into a skill that you do not have all the SP for yet, by putting it into the queue.
In EVE, the queue is limited in that no skill can start more than 24 hours from the beginning of the queue, but as DUST has active SP this would be harder to manage. Instead, perhaps once the total points in the skill queue surpasses 200 or 500 thousand, no more skills can be added (ex. you could add 196,000 SP in skills into the queue, and then one skill that requires 600,000 SP, but you could not add any skills at the end if your queue was at 200,000 SP).

Would be nice. I don't play EVE but I want to and looked into some things about it, the skill queue was one of them.
I thought of a slightly altered version that you could use to queue skills, but wouldn't automatically put skill points into them, instead it would behave like a reminder.
*Ping!* "You now have enough unnalocated skill points to reach the set level on item number one in your skill queue."
(buying a different skill before leveling an item in the queue) *Ping!* "You currently have a different skill queued as top priority. Are you certain you would like to continue?" (Yes/No box appears)
But passively putting your skill points into a skill as you earn them would help out with people who are impulsive and go "Ooh, I know I'm saving for that skill that costs almost 1 mill SP but look! Increased CPU output!" by locking them into it and stopping them from being able to spend it on something else.
Also if it puts skill points passively into a skill towards leveling it I think that if they decide to cancel it and start accruing unnalocated SP again that the SP they put towards the skill STAY in the skill, lowering its cost because they already put some SP towards it.
The skill queue should be completely optional. It's there but you don't have to use it if you don't want to. |
