Not many people have gone proto shotgun I am sure... I have so here are my thoughts.
You sir, are correct. It's useless as a primary weapon in the long haul. It's likely the sharpshooter duff has hurt the shotgun more than any other weapon out there. It's the maps. A fine line where you used to be able to survive and move to cover, or survive and close the gap existed in the last build providing you were a good player. It's gone now and there are dead zones for shotgun users all over these maps regardless of skill. Better players who have figured this out tease users by easily staying out of range while blasting the user who can't make it to cover.
Stuck with the shotgun, the better choice is now use a SMG as the primary and switch to shotgun as a secondary if you manage to get in close. Is this truly working as intended? I highly doubt it. I think CCP didn't think this through, at all. |

from everything i've seen the main problem with teh shotgun now is that without sharpshooter it's effective range is incredibly short.
most videos i've watched of people using it don't get close enough. |

Had the same issue but with using my points in HMG and Heavy, it's sucks, worthless and waste of my points, so I petitioned CCP and this is what they sent back to me

We are unfortunately unable to provide any further re-spec to any character further to the one provided to you upon the release of the Uprising build which is the final re-spec prior to the game being released later this month.
As we are not offering any further re-spec, any skill point spent is unfortunately permanently attributed to the chosen skill however progress in DUST 514 is never wasted and you can still skill up the required attributes by accumulating more SP during Battles. |

Personally I'm not finding the shotgun too different for my play style. Yes the range loss sucks but its something I've learned to work with ( people still don't turn around to check that they aren't being followed ).
However I can agree that the sp required is ridiculous. Having to get light weapons to IV not to mention all the skills used in the stealthy/infiltrator style role requires a lot of sp and isn't exactly friendly to newer players who want to fill the same role.
Basically the range is fine as is because people still make dumb decisions ( although I wouldn't say no to an increase ), but the sp cost needs to be reconsidered in my opinion. |

Almost all weapons are fubar now. The skill tree is fubar. The game sux now. I wonder if they tried to play it themselves before they launched ?
I really hope this is a mistake and they fix it all fast. If this really is what they have in mind for Dust then it's not a game for me anymore.
To bad i already bought 8 merc packs and 200k aur In the time it was god game. I had a feeling that it would only get better.

Well I use the shotgun as my main weapon and I've put a lot of skills in it too, guys. And let me tell you something, the range is a big deal for some of us man, but I've always liked to get very close with it anyways so that didn't affect me that much, guys. I admit I've got much harder time aiming this build though and I also wish the shotgun proficiency would give us damage like other weapons do, because many times the rate of fire isn't as useful as pure damage would be. I do think shotgun is still pretty good though. |

i'm extremely disappointed with shotguns in this build. range is idiotic and hit detection is even more idiotic. if i feel more safe and less defensless on the field with knives, then something is terribly borked. |

My initial response to this thread was that range was the big issue. But I agree hit detection and the aiming issues have compounded the problem to the extreme. If i hear they fixed the controller and range and added some distance I'll give it another whirl,,, |

It isn't just the range nerf either. It is remarkably difficult to hit people at close range these days. It is all too common to have a dance-off rather than a shoot-off at close range. Given that one time you can shoot somebody straight in the face and get nothing, and another time you can shoot a few feet off target and get a 0HK, the shotgun has become a game of luck, at a range where nova knives offer a game of certainty. |

Yeah, I call bullshit. Playing some of these matches, all I get killed by are shotguns, the ass holes with the ars are just a distraction. The range is still several meters, and the damage output is still huge. There is no reason a shotgun needs to reach 30meters, it's a damn shotgun, not a sniper rifle. It's meant for close quarters found in either a well planned ambush or in urban settings. |

The damage done at max range was minimal due to dispersion.. but they still did some damage, and should. Shooting at someone that isn't that far away, and doing nothing at all... is wrong. |

I agree with you there, but even at the tip of their range, a shot gun and still whack the average medium suit of equivalent level in about 3 shots.
The shotgun is fine the way it is, even if a tad obnoxious. |

It depends entirely on max range and dispersion. Proto shotgun pellet does 44 damage, and if max range was increased properly, you'd only get hit with 1 pellet. 44 damage enough to drop you in 3? Or better yet add impact damage dropoff instead and get hit with say 4 pellets at 20%..... err 35 damage? 3 still scary?
The bullet disappearing act is the problem here., and the controller aim ATM. |
