The core of the game is already there in all it's sub 30 FPS glory.
It's cooked. Unless the engine is re-written, don't expect any massive changes. Well, the movements and the aim were better in the last build so they can at least go back to that. It's not going to happen. You are playing the release build. The only way this game will change is either to port it to more powerful hardware or start again with a new engine. You're right.
They haven't already been able to improve beyond the limitations of previous builds.
And there certainly aren't any games built in UE3 with better capabilities than the current build of DUST...

And no, there aren't any multiplayer games built on UE3 with the AMBITIONS that DUST has. But that doesn't negate the fact that other games - some with equivalent CURRENT FUNCTIONALITY - have been made with better framerate and graphics than the current build we're playing. It also doesn't negate the fact that the devs have been making the engine look like it's struggling in every build, then made it better with almost every subsequent build.
Quote:You can see it for your ******* self every time you load the game. The engine is creaking. It can't even hit the target 30FPS. Couldn't hit the target 30fps last build with smaller maps and worse graphics. Build before that? Even worse. Your point?
What exactly am I meant to be a "fanboy" of? Game development? Unreal Engine? If you've seen some of my recent posts in these forums, you'll notice I'm more on the negative side for DUST than the positive in its current state. It needs a LOT of work. All I'm saying is that the necessary work can be considered a plausible option. It might not be possible for CCP to optimise the engine correctly to achieve it with a decent framerate, or it might take a long time and not be optimised correctly for a couple of years. |

I am a little unsettled of late after being told that the PS3 can run UE3 at 1000 fps if devs want it to.
/twitches with rage Oh dear. That's just... wow.
What are they rendering? A single pixel?
Quote:The UE3 engine has always been unkind to the PS3. The game just needs more powerful hardware to realize it's potential.
The PS3 is just not powerful enough. And this isn't entirely accurate. The PS3 is technically a more powerful system than the XBox 360, which UE3 games generally run better on. The PS3's architecture isn't based as closely on PC, which is the engine's native platform, and it also has fixed memory allocation which prevents it from adapting effectively to graphics- or processing-intensive software. There are some games where the devs have re-optimised the engine well enough to run as well - and in a couple of cases better - but they're the exceptions rather than the rule, and I haven't heard of an instance of this happening without either PS3 as the lead platform or the devs having significant previous experience with both the engine and hardware.
But yes, compared to current-gen PCs, the PS3 is underpowered, and the fixed memory doesn't help its case.
EDIT: Also, +1 for a well-reasoned response |
