Or "How CCP manages to still **** things up despite my trying to support them".
When I heard about DUST on the PS3 only, as an EVE player I thought for about a second. Then said maybe when my oldest kid is old enough to play video games I'll get a PS3 and try DUST if it is still around. That's not worth spending the money on by itself.
Well, that day recently came and I got a PS3 so I could get him Skylanders. Therefore, I could also play DUST. I quickly learned how similar those two games are. Except DUST doesn't have cool little microchipped figurines.
I'm not a console guy. I haven't been an FPS guy since Quake and Unreal. I can't judge DUST by those other FPS games.
But, I can judge DUST by the standards of CCP and EVE.
Things wrong with CCPs direction with DUST:
1. It's a PS3 only console game with long term character building mechanics that end up meaning nothing during actual game play. Like EVE you train skills for months only to be primaried to death, camp stations or sit at gates waiting to fight.
I quit EVE because of this and EVE's mechanics fit right in as part of a PC market that attracts long term, pedantic (autistic?) math nerds.
I wonder how many console gamers are going to sit there for months training up a character only to find out that circumstances will still get them two shotted in a split second? How many months and you still feel like you are a noob in a militia fit? (Yeah, more beer, less skill training.)
My guess is about 1% after a year or so will still be on this game. That's the 1% that play EVE. Everyone else will go on to all the other games that this game mimics. They want to log in, die, rinse and repeat.
2. How does this connect to EVE? Not in any meaningful way. Not as far as DUST players will be concerned.
This will benefit only EVE players. It's a one way street.
Also, this point has been a big promotional point for DUST. You'd think they would have started with that aspect and let the FPS part be basic. Therefore, you'd feel like it's something else. Something different than all the CoDs et al.
I could care less where the damn orbital bombardments are coming from. I could care less if another game is affecting my economy or providing my contracts. Give me some direct, meaningful connection between my actions and another game.
My bet is CCP is going to have to end up handing out meta goodies in EVE for people who play DUST rather than any in-game features to reward players for their actions.
3. Why does this game seem like a glorified (tweaked) version of EVE's Incarna (Walking in Stations) fiasco? Why does the gameplay seem so lame that ppl will just give up and go all militia fits for cheap, quick laughs?
So far with this new build I've noticed nothing but tons of grenades being thrown, more dancing by fairy ballerinas and worst of all running over people with vehicles because get thisGǪ my LAV turret couldn't damage two infantry guys worth ****.
Really, I had the guy driving the LAV ramming some guys in front while I was shooting two guys point blank to the rear and they were taking zero damage. I said screw it and hopped in an LAV myself and just ran over someone after that.
The game should be just those militia fits and cheap, quick, stupid fun because that's about all you're going to get on a console game. Training skills for months doesn't fit with that kind of fun.
Get on with the "affecting the universe at large" aspect CCP. Forget trying to mask an MMO without any real MMO aspects behind an FPS that already has a flooded market and using a game engine from another game that went the way of the dinosaurs.
It's free you say? That's the problem. Charge for it and keep people playing a bit longer than they would for free or charge for a game worth spending money on.
I want this game to go somewhere but I fear after a year there will be another burning in Jita or as close to that as you can get in DUST. Maybe CCP can add a map with a statue in the middle for us to shoot in protest. Lol. |

If that's the extent of your experience in EVE I dare to wager you were terrible at it.

The games not even released yet, they just added planetary conquest to one region. Patience.

Anytime something goes wrong everyone resorts to crying that the sky is falling and dredging up the biggest of CCP's mistakes in hopes that it takes the 'I'm a whiny 13 year old' edge off their b!tching. |

Extent of my experience? Nope. But that's sure as hell what combat is in EVE unless you are shooting at NPCs. THERE IS AMPLE EVIDENCE FROM PLAYERS ABOUT THIS. If you think it's anything more (blob warfare not included) then you must not really have played EVE. I wish I was terrible at EVE. I wasn't. I was a good little gate/station sitter. Waiting for the FC to actually go lose some pixels.

Don't use the beta excuse with me. I'm not even referring to the stuff that other players have been mentioning like the graphics. CCP isn't changing the skill training game mechanics in a week or two. What I said has everything to do with CCPs game plan for this. They are crossing beams so to speak on EVE type play and console type play. They want both types of players and will end up with neither if they don't figure out their audience. This should and could have been a RTS game on the PC and they would have raked in the cash and actually gotten more people to play both games.

Lol. Every time somebody makes an observation there's a fanboi willing to envoke the "bitching" statement. I wish I was 13 though. Maybe I'd get more game time in enough to feel the need to defend bad game design. |
