CCP is relying on numbers from some database. The issue is that these numbers are not valid because they don't take player skill into account.
Situation 1: CCP sees numbers that shows Militia Gear is seriously underpowered when compared to Proto Gear. Solution: Nerf Proto Gear and buff Militia Gear.
Situation 2: CCP sees numbers of specific class gear being used to great efficiency. Solution: Nerf Proto Gear and Buff Militia Gear.
You can replace militia gear with anything you want, the outcome is the same. At no time does or can CCP take into account player skill. All of their balance fixes are truly a shot in the dark. Sure they can look at damage numbers, they can probably compare number of hits vs misses with a specific weapon type, but they can't take into account that mouse/keyboard players have a different experience than a controller player. They can't take into account player abilities, so the solution is just to nerf high tier gear and buff low tier gear to equalize the playing field.
Now I'm fine with equalizing the players when it comes to gear. In fact I fully support it. I say get rid of all the different gear types and just have racial gear graphics that have all the same stats for any given type of gear. All assault are the same...all heavies are the same...and so on.
Then you can make the game truly about the skills that players to choose to spend SP in and you can account for player ability better. Then the only thing that has to be balanced are the skills, one against the others.
But instead, CCP has made this overly complicated game in a genre that they have zero experience with as a whole. Sure they probably have a few developers that have worked on FPS games before, in fact they have a former BF3 dev working for them, but on the whole, CCP is clueless about what makes a great FPS. They know what makes a great MMO and they are working towards that and leaving the FPS portion of the game to wild ass fly the seat of their pants adjustments to things that will never be balanced because control of the ability to use gear ultimately lies in the hands of the player. |
