Right now I'm insanely mad about the game and the forge gun, namely getting tremendously pwned by one (militia too!) and the game mostly lags/bugs out cause of the sudden explosion and death and gives me absolutely no clue what the **** just happened. No sound, no visual, no TACNET, nothing. I'm just floating in grey space and slowly land on the ground. Magic. Only the death message that it was a forge gun. And heavys are supposed to make a large mark on the map and all. I've tried to imagine where the guy/gal was, but it was a narrow space, and no real opportunity to climb up anywhere.
I have been smashed in more obvious situations too, so I figured it would be a good idea to play some with the forge. But out of all dozens of matches even more firefight, I have managed to hit only a handfull and killed just one. Even when the crosshair is red and it looks i have a clean shot, the stupid game let the shot go through somehow. When I hit the ground or nearby walls it doen't do more than stir up dust. Seconds later I am down. Mostly the game lags to some extent, and sometimes it's really choppy, especially when you're close to someone. The guy kinda jumps forward in 2m steps every 0.2-0.3 seconds, making it hard to follow with the aim. And since you don't see the actual shot, I don't know if I should aim right on or right before the character. But when I'm playing assault and run around to fool a guy with a forge gun, I'm smashed before I can blink.
AAARRGHGHGHGHGHHHHHH!!! Drivin me nuts! WHAT'S WRONG WITH THIS!
And since there's no manual, and no other clue than a clunky forum to get wiser through...
So how the hell does the forge gun work!?!?! Moreover, what's a useful tactics?
Sigh... thank you. |

Well depends what type of forge you're using, I prefer the assault as a nice anti infantry tool with its short charge time. Generally you aim a little in front of them, depending on the angle aiming at their feet is usually a good bet. I only aim straight at people if I have to get the kill on a single shot with no room for a follow up one.
Explosions can be a little bit buggy so ensuring it hits the ground right at their feet gives the best results. It just takes a lot of practice to be efficient with them. Get yourself a militia heavy suit and an assault forge and practice practice. As for aiming, the shot can go anywhere in the crosshair so it has abit of a random spread on it so you have to get a little bit lucky. Crouching helps with the aim but is not useful in close quarters with an assault suit against you. Keep moving and duck a few shots or you will die quickly. |

The forge gun is practically a ' vehicle sniper ', that has no zoom and must be hit fired. As such, they can hit you from the smallest part of your vehicle being exposed. I have personally counter sniped a fair amount of snipers. You must aim a slight bit in front of them, due to there being travel time. The most likely place you got shot from is the top of a building. Like snipers, forge gunners who attack infantry tend to find high up places (that way even if they don't get a direct hit, the round still scores splash damage from hitting the ground). That being said, snipers work better against infantry. |

You need some practice is all. Expect to die.
My first thirty attempts produced results in only the last ten. At least against infantry.
Stay back. Get the charge up. Step out from cover and pop a turret. Take a second shot and get back into cover. Reload and do it again. A normal Turret will take three shots from lower level FGs.
For infantry the practice is even more important. You have to learn how much time it takes for the round to hit and where it might hit. The reticule is a hint, nothing more. There is no real cross hair and the reason is the sucker isn't that accurate. Getting used to a particular type of FG is the best way to learn. Aim at their feet until you get comfortable with the process.
My normal FG is the Assault. 2.5s charge and no storing. Figure out where you are going to aim at and press the trigger As You Step Out. Bang. That takes practice as well.
Skill into SMGs or use a Toxin. I prefer it to over the Scrambler Pistol but you may not. It if faster to equip than to reload if infantry is chasing you.
For any heavy if you lose half your health Back Off. Get behind cover and wait for recovery before you try again. The odds on dying are much higher if you don't.
The Breach FG hits incredibly hard. But you cannot move. Be above the action. Try to aim down on unsuspecting targets, tanks included.
An additional thing to take into consideration is getting Kills Stolen. It happens, whether on purpose or accident doesn't matter. Make sure you reload such that you can finish off what ever it is you are killing without a reload near the end. Put a round in and reload. Then if you miss you don't leave a 90% dead target for someone else to claim.
Good Luck.

One more thing I would recommend:
Use the Militia Heavy suit along with the Militia Heavy Gun. I'll leave it up to you as to what modules to use but for now, use Militia level gear to get a feel for it. That way the price cost stays cheap and you won't go broke when you die.
High Slot: Militia Heavy Weapon Damage Modifier or Militia Shield Extender. Low Slot: Militia Armor Plate, Militia Armor Repair or Militia Cardiac Regulator (the green one)
Militia Locus Grenade are great for infantry. AV grenades are pretty cheap but require at least skilling to level one in Grenadier. However, this makes for a good backup in case of a charging enemy LAV while you are stuck reloading your Forge Gun.
Militia Scrambler Pistol is good at longer ranges but takes precise aiming. Miltia Submachine Gun is great at shorter ranges and doesn't require much precision aiming.
If you want to take out Forge Gunners though, remember that sometimes there are rooftops that don't have ladder, but just because there are no ladders, doesn't mean people can't get up there. Dropships will often take people up to buildings to very good vantage points to allow Forge Gunners to rain down pain on unsuspecting enemies. Always be on the lookout for them everywhere.
As for a manual, here you go: http://dust.ccpgamescdn.com/Dust514/client-text/DUSTmanual.html
Enjoy, and good luck! |

Forge gunners have a huge advantage with height, like mass drivers. Usually, if you notice your team is getting smashed by a single guy with a forge gun, scan the higher areas.
Forge guns, as mentioned above, cannot zoom. Not even a little, like the HMG. The targeting reticle is fairly large, meaning pinpoint accuracy is difficult to achieve.
There is projectile travel time, however slight, but this does mean leading a fast moving vehicle is required.
Put the inability to zoom and travel time together and you have a medium-long range sniper. These forge guns do 3-4 times more damage than a charge sniper rifle and has splash damage.
The aiming, though, requires practise. 1 v 1 against a forge gunner and I win 7/10 of the fights. The other three times, either I'm killed by his teammates, he pulls off a lucky hit or I kill myself with a grenade.
That's in close range, strafing around him, spraying and reloading and jumping.
But once a forge gunner gains that height advantage, it's all over. Generally, they'll position themselves in places where mass drivers can hit as well. Some spots can only be reached by dropship, which makes it even harder to get to them because they have bloody forge guns to deter any aerial assault.
So yeah, it does get frustrating being on the receiving end sometimes. |
