A lot of tankers I run into have also spec'd into one type of AV all the way to proto, yet the infantry guys will hide behind the fact it costs a lot of SP to get into tanking. How about this, the guys that say tanking is easy and have never tanked before, I will give you a militia fitted Gunnlogi, you survive the game and actually spend time on the front line with your team, I'll bow down to your words of great wisdom and intellect. You die within moments? You don't comment on AV v Tanks anymore.
I suck with tanks, but I also have hardly ever actually fielded a tank. Maybe ten times, all of which ended quickly and badly. There's no question they require skill. They also require practice, especially with Dust's horrible module activation system, so let's not pretend that anyone mopping up the field in a tank has just jumped in one for the first time, as you're suggesting. A lot of the people I see in tanks don't venture past the redline without a full tank and 2-3 infantry on the ground supporting them, so it's not as though it's merely their own skill that's making them successful.
Part of the problem with tanks is that there are quite a few really good tankers, who will indeed go something like 40-0 without coordinated AV opposition. Enough so that there are also a lot of people with AV skills and non-militia AV gear ready to pull it out when there's a tank around. As such, it's a lot harder to learn to do well in a tank than it was when a lot of these guys polished their tank skills in closed beta. All the more reason why we need a sandbox mode of sorts so new players can practice not sucking in tanks (and dropships and so on).
Only tangentially related: My favorite tank experience so far was a guy who perched a tank at the tippy top of the tall hill overlooking Objective A on Manus Peak and was spawn camping it -- bear in mind he had to point the tank downhill from up there, teetering over the cliff, to even aim at the ground. I got a chuckle out of that one. Eventually he plummeted all the way down the hill, but somehow didn't explode. I didn't begrudge him the kills, as that was pretty inventive. |
