Being inspired by Fanfest 2013 and having some experience with game tournaments I wanted to float an idea with the community to get the benefit of all your experience in the area. This isn't a grand in-the-EVE-universe tournament. It's a lot more modest and local.
If, in your city, you could participate in a DUST 514 tournament hosted in a venue that served bar food and drinks and was set up with PS3s / 32GÇ¥ displays and big screen TVs for spectating would you sign up for it? Would you go just to watch and hang out? What would you want in the way of prizes for the winners? What kind of a tournament would you like?
What do you folks think? |

I think things like this would be great, I'd love to participate in one or at least watch, prizes...not a clue, though as for tournaments heres my ideas. Possibly have multiple types for example, a standard fight, tank battle royale, dropship dogfighting etc. Just a thought. |

I was thinking more along the lines of people signing up locally and getting a starter character that they built up over the duration of the tournament. If the promoter could get some help from CCP they could "gift" each round winner(s) with 1,000,000 SP and 1,000,000 ISK to apply to the next round. At each level the players would all have the same SP / ISK to use but the amount would go up for each round -- later rounds, fancier stuff, more specialization if people want to use it.

So let me throw some numbers out there as examples. Round 1=1m sp Round 2=2m sp Round 3=4m sp and so on? |

So let me throw some numbers out there as examples. Round 1=1m sp Round 2=2m sp Round 3=4m sp and so on? That's the general idea -- but I was thinking more along the lines of Round 1 3,000,000 SP / 3,000,000 ISK, Round 2 1M SP more and 1M ISK more. But the actual amounts would have to be tailored to the total we want in the final round. The idea is to allow contestants to skill up to fancy gear by the end of the tournament.
I was also considering that round 1 would be 1-on-1, round 2, 2-on-2, round 3 4-on-4 and so on to get some team play into the mix. People would have to be good at shooting but would also have to be able to effectively jump into teams and make them work. You could get some specialization going as well with that kind of system.
To GoD-NoVa's point - I see this as more of a local / social DUST 514 development / awareness / community outreach kind of thing rather than a vehicle for existing corporations. I'm pretty sure the in-universe tournaments will cater to the existing corporations.
That being said -- if two corporations have enough people to field teams in a particular city I could see it as being an awesome event. Once the mechanics of the physical setup for these tournaments are in place it would make that kind of thing a lot easier.

Venue can be a bit of an issue. I know some Starcraft league has, on occasion, been able to do events/spectation of matches at places like Buffalo Wild Wings, but that's STARCRAFT, and it doesn't happen often. Though as DotA/LOL and streaming gets bigger and bigger, maybe in a year or two situations will improve.
As for match/tourney conditions, you should push for CCP to work on something like a SP/ISK limiter mechanism and players create a sub-build/profile(s?) when the need arises, (and a progression mechanic for your leagues). Another feature to stick in as a part of a Gladiator/e-sports update.
Though for local play, if you use your normal character, PSN login security would be an issue that concerns me. |

Though for local play, if you use your normal character, PSN login security would be an issue that concerns me. Good point about the venue -- I have some ideas in my local area but I don't know how reproducible they would be.
Regarding the players -- I was thinking of creating a corporation just for a tournament. When someone signs up they get a pre-allocated character in the corporation -- say Player001 -- and their first batch of ISK / SP. They could set it up before they ever showed up at the tournament. During the tournament they would get 15 minutes before each match to integrate their SP / ISK bonus from winning the previous round into their character.
The help we would need from CCP is the ability to set up these kinds of corporations, the characters within them, and the ability to give them ISK and SP rewards for winning rounds. Needless to say these characters could not be used in open play within the rest of DUST 514. I think this would be easier and more secure than using an existing character.
Another nice touch would be a way to add an alias to the character name so a player could request an in-tournament name.
For the tournament itself there would need to be an administrative function to set up a match and place characters in it. I'd be surprised if all these mechanisms didn't already exist for testing purposes. The development issue would be packaging them in a secure way for administrating these kinds of tournaments.
