I love sidearms, especially scrambler pistols, but you can fit any sidearm into a light weapon slot. Keep the PG/CPU usage of sidearms low, and the PG/CPU of light weapons high. The suits that have a weapon slot for a sidearm and another for a light weapon (like assault) will just have two light weapon slots instead.
If CCP wanted, they could even make the switch something you need to skill into. Sidearms could be fit into the second light weapon slot without skilling anything else up, but let's say I want to fit an AR there, I could skill into that.
This obviously leads to more customization. It is already done to a certain extent. There is a dropsuit that has an assault rifle as its sidearm. The assault rifle has the same stats, but can fit into the sidearm slot. Another option is to just do this. Make it so that a merc can skill into using a light weapon in his sidearm slot.
I'm not for going from light weapon to heavy, but I do not see a problem with sidearm to light weapon. It also provides a bit more of an advantage to having a sidearm and not if someone wants to use it.
This can only be done after trading and the market opens up, but I think it would also be cool if you could pick up and use the weapons that other mercs dropped once they died. It was always annoying as a starting player to kill someone with a ****** MLT gun and not be able to use the awesome one the other player just dropped. It might not be anything for now, but in the future it would be sweet. Especially if the system moves away from passive skills and goes to allowing people to customize a weapon.
If someone dies, drops a sweet gun, you can drop your sidearm and pick it up as a secondary weapon if you desire.
This can already somewhat be done with vehicles. I have given vehicles to other players, and have had vehicles given to me. If there is an awesome dropship pilot who hasn't skilled into it, someone else can call in a dropship and let him fly it. If I have someone who wants to try out driving a HAV, if he has the ISK he can start off with a new shiny full proto HAV instead of starting at the MLT level. |

There's already a suit with 2x light weapons in the game, so I don't think this is too far off. It's just that the assault rifle is classified as a "sidearm" on the dropsuit.
So my guess is that it is going to happen more often, or something similar to it will. I really love my scrambler pistols, so as long as they keep the pg/cpu reqs low, I'd keep them on my assault.
This is for PROTO dropsuit level ONLY
A big problem I have with the current logi suit is that it is the best at almost everything. It is better than the assault suit in almost every way. The one thing that the logi suit is obviously lacking is a sidearm. However, that sidearm is not enough to make the logi suit worse than the assault. Giving the assault a second LW slot instead of a sidearm would make the assault suit better than a logi suit in a number of situations, even though the assault suit is slower, has less pg, less cpu, fewer mod slots, etc., etc. Sure, hitbox is nice too, but the assault needs a little something extra ^.^
I really intend this to be for the proto lvl only, or maybe some skills beyond (like for a specific dropsuit or whatever.) IMO all suits should be equally viable in top level corp battles, and they are not. I'm not a fan of nerfs. CCP is coming out with new dropsuits, but they will continue to tweak/change/add more in the future. Scout needs to become a lot better, and assault needs to be slightly better too.
More variety is good.
It'd be cool for the MMO aspect too. I'd love to have a scrambler pistol as my primary weapon and an AR or something like that as a secondary weapon ^-^ |

I have run with something like an AR as my primary and a scrambler as my secondary. I sometimes wonder where my merc puts his AR when he pulls out his scrambler pistol? 0_+
He's got huge pockets or something, I have no idea where he hides that thing! The forge guns are even better.
My theory is that when a heavy pulls out a secondary weapon like a SMG, he eats his primary. That's one of the reasons why his suit keeps him so fat. He needs to have room in it to eat a forge gun whole, and the capability to regurgitate it at a moment's notice when he'd like to use it again. |
