The original suit DevBlog talked about how the backpack contained the power system of the suit, and even the current Gallente scout has a small module on the back that can be assumed to fulfill that requirement, but several of the new models shown have nothing at all. |

Too expensive to develop from that far away. The only reason they lasted this long as is wasnt the vampire game. |

I assume some suits don't have a backpack because the backpack is some kind of power unit.
All the suits have a backpack except for the scout so as a result, I'd say the light frame suits don't need as much power as the others. |

All racial suits have backpacks, some are just really small, the different races use different power systems, so the power type they use and the size (and power draw) of the suit influences the size of the backpacks.
The Gallente for example have very high tech power generation technology (antimatter I believe) compared to the Minmatar, who use fusion reactors. So that's why the Gallente have a very small profile for their backpacks compared to the huge things the Minmatar heft around.
Also forgot to mention that in the case of Gallente and Amarr, because they favour armour over shields, their suits probably draw less power than the typically shielded Caldari and Minmatar. |
