Equipped would indicate that it took a weapon slot and had a its own dmg. There used to be a knife animation but it was never present other then the animation. Also it never had its own dmg so it was never a equipped weapon as all dmg came from the DS dmg table specific to each dropsuit.

Its was not a weapon with its own stats or a item you would lose on the battlefield thus it was not a item. It never had its own dmg table. It was just a animation used for the melee attack. Nothing was lost when they changed the animation it a physical weapon melee.

The Nova knife was added as its own weapon in chromozone.

Armor is getting rebalanced in the next build and different racial suits mean that you don't have to be limited to just shields.
