Seeing that normal corp battles often are a dreary affair, I hope planetary conquest will be different. Corp battles as they've been played up to now normally consist of 20 minutes waiting and talking BS in a corp channel, followed by a battle that may or may not have any action in it.
Its the low pacing of everything in Dust that makes it, well, dreary. Facing good teams is a challenge and the battles may be very fun indeed, but those are far between. Even in those we often end up in situations where I get maybe 5-6 actual encounters during a battle, the rest is "staying at X just in case something red comes a long." This is mostly due to the huge maps relative to the small player counts, I hope it will improve over time.
I have to admit that I just watched a MAG domination vid and the pace of combat, map progression, the sence of urgency are all good qualities from MAG that are totally absent in Dust. In just about all the major MAG games I've played its more or less non stop action from start to finish, you never had to go far to find enemies. And yes I know, Dust isn't MAG and I don't really want it to be.
I just fear that the game becomes a nerd fest in the sence that we use more time on grouping up, discussing fittings, getting stuff organized, trading and so on, everything but playing hectic, chaotic, stressfull and exciting battles.
Now its easy, just do back to back Ambush games and you'll always have something to shoot at. Not that pubstomping with the occational good group on the other team is that much exciting in the long run, its still the place to go to if you want constant action and regular panic attacks.
So I ask you, the community, will we be able to keep the percentage of time spent in Dust doing actual battles, or will we spend even more time doing everything else?

I agree on everything you've said EXCEPT for wanting chaotic battles. I like the more structured and deliberate pace. The gunfights themselves go fairly fast, but there's time enough between encounters to actually formulate plans and schemes mid-battle rather than just being white-knuckled twitch reaction from start to end of the match. |

DUST will never be as good as MAG, it has less lag and freezing but the battles aren't as good like you mentioned. You can't win them all, you want this game to have the good qualities of MAG whilst retaining it's own merit but you can never hope to be 100% satisfied.
As for your actual question, people are already faffing about, logging on to only create dropsuits. The game has more to it than just queue up and shoot people so it's to be expected but it's not about to consume everyone's playing time. |

There are two factors in play: preparation time, and time spent deployed on battlefield.
Time spent in preparation is mostly a function of corp discipline and efficiency. If there is a robust LFG/FA system in place in corp chat, corp battles/FW/PC are scheduled and squads prepared beforehand by officers, and people actually follow these protocols, it'll drastically cut time spent waiting for action.
CCP must do quite a bit to improve all of these and some improvements have been promised in Uprising, but in the end it doesn't matter how easy it is to invite someone to squad if they go AFK a minute after their LFG note, or don't show up to a scheduled corp battle on time.
On battlefield Dust is certainly slower-paced than MAG, BF or especially CoD or Tribes. This is (I believe) by design, though. And it doesn't necessarily make Dust worse, just different - let's ignore the myriad issues with FPS mechanics Dust has for the moment.
Squad 1 is supposed to stay behind at A while squad 2 caps C. Sure, it might not be very exciting if enemy keeps two squads defending C. But it's tactics, and goes well beyond anything we see in BF or CoD, and hopefully some day beyond MAG. We have the potential for it as PC and other deeper game modes come along Soon, but we're not there yet.
If you want to just play a fast-paced FPS try Ambush with or without corp mates, or perhaps another FPS which is better suited for that type of gameplay. I feel and hope there is room for Dust-style tactical and even strategic FPS out there. |

Well you realize this game isn't MAG right, so why would the developers study and take notes on a game that failed and died, especially the company who made it(Zipper)- who also where owned by Sony.

I believe the increased player count (will be 16 vs 16) in corp battles will lead to more intense battles. Still won't be as intense as MAG, but certainly an improvement. |

thanks for the laughs.

Amazing at all the love MAG is getting on here. Not just this thread but on numerous others. And Its deserved. MAG may have shot themselves in the foot, with paying for DLC. (before that 200+ person battles were instant) But as a FPS MAG just rocked! It will always be looked upon fondly by those FPS "Connoisseurs" out there. Along with SOCOM, Tom Clancy Vegas 2, Home Front, Battlefield, Resistance. Cryisis. "YOU FORGOT HALO!!" No bro I didn't. NOT HALO. Never HALO. Joke of a FPS that was, along with COD. The Day I took out 5 (thats a squad!) of cheeky monkeys by myself with only a rifle and a kitchen knife, (or elbow for you halo nuts) was the day I took a cold shower and quit playing. Disgusting feeling I tell you.
Anyway, Dust is what it is, becouse of the "EVE" in front of it. It would never hold a candle to a FPS. ANY FPS. But maybe if we were to treat it as an MMORPG. Then maybe you can find some find in this game.
I myself am a scout. with a shotgun. and c4s. I play my role and no more. I wont' run with the team to the trenches with the sounds of Ruff Ryders "Down Bottom" playing (sorry Basement), I will simply secure and hold ONE objective. I have long range scanners and zoom out to the large map after I get into my strategic place, (Hide) So I will always see them before they see me. I learned to play this slow and as a MMORPG. I didn't before tho. I like many wanted this to really work as a FPS. But compared to mag. No.. doesn't hold a candle.
