Depends on what weapon you are using, if you are using a Lazer rifle at close range then you are going to have a hard time. If you are using a SMG at close range and still having problems then the other advice is correct, you need to get good. Practice trying to engage at closer ranges with more rapid fire weapons designed for close combat until you can extend your range more.
Please note this game is not very smooth and it takes extra effort to keep on target. |

I find if people strafe at medium-long ranges, they tend to generally strafe too wide or too narrow. Too narrow, and I don't even bother moving my gun; they strafe back into my stream of bullets anyway. Too wide, and they don't have enough unpredictability and I easily track them. And if they jump and strafe, well, that works until they run out of stamina.
At close ranges though, strafers and bunny-hopping is insanely annoying. I usually give up then (as a logi I have no sidearm) and lob a grenade into the ground and hope they try avoid that, giving me breathing space. If not, I end up dying fast.
When I get so far from my teammates that I've allowed someone to get that close without being able to do anything about it, though, I deserve the death. |

"Get gud" can be easily translated as "I have nothing to contribute but that won't stop me from commenting."
Dealing with the shuffling line dancer types can be frustrating, so if you're really having trouble with them it would be easiest to simply disengage from the fight. (That's assuming that you aren't both standing way out in the open at Manus Peak.) Go find some cover, and try to flank him if you can break line of sight for a while. (It helps having better dampening and sensors than the other guy, but I wouldn't sacrifice putting SP into your combat effectiveness for those skills.) If he smells blood and is determined to follow you, it's a good time to bate him into running around a corner into a remote explosive or cooked grenade.
If you're absolutely committed to the shuffle fight, then you're going to have to shuffle too. (There are some decent training videos on YouTube.) Be sure to know the strengths and weaknesses of the weapons involved. SMGs are excellent anti-strafing weapons, but have pitiful range compared to the AR that your fleet footed enemy is almost certainly wielding.
Just be glad that you weren't around during the days of the invincible dancing scout, before they nerfed strafing speed and started fixing the hit detection. |

Like someone said above...
When someone is moving rapidly back and forth.. Sometimes the answer is to not overcommit to aiming. Definitely do not use ADS (aim down sight) while in a strafe battle. It slows you down and gives the other guy a lot easier time.
Hipfire in controlled bursts if you can to minimize spread, and if you can't track them with hipfire, try to keep your cursor in a middle ground between where they are bouncing back and forth. Let them run into your bullets, so to speak.
Try to avoid jumping where possible, while it works very well against mediocre to poor players, skilledp layers will just eat you up while you're travelling in a fixed speed/direction that you can't control.
Like said in the post above : Disengaging is not always a bad idea. Run around corners, and make them follow you. Cook a grenade after you pass the corner, and turn around and throw it at their feet as they follow you. Either way, for that second or so they come around the corner, you can hit them in ADS and then swap back to hipfire if needed. |

Strafing is only viable in two scenarios, as I'll set out below, along with their counters.
1. The shooter isn't adjusting for the target's strafing.
Obviously, if you keep firing in one spot while a guy moves back and forth through your hail of bullets, he'll take less damage than you if he's aiming for you the whole time. It only makes sense that you need to adjust your aim if you want to be hitting consistently.
Solution: Get good.
2. Server-side hit detection.
Unlike most current-gen FPS games, which use client-side hit detection, DUST tracks this server-side. Normally, when you line up a hitscan weapon on your target, firing while the target is in your crosshairs will guarantee that your shot lands on the target. It's as simple as that. In DUST, server-side hit detection means that if you line up, the game tracks your shot NOT from the moment you pull the trigger, but from the moment your client tells the server that you pulled the trigger. If the target has moved since then, your shots will be off-target.
Solution: Learn to compensate for your latency. You can get a rough estimate of how far to lead your shots by tapping your fire button and watching the ammo counter - it's also tracked server side, so the amount of time before it drops will give you a hint as to how much of a delay you'll need to allow for. If you aim about that far ahead of your target, you can hit consistently. Your ping isn't going to be 100% stable through all your games, but as long as you're on the same server, it should be mostly stable enough to just calibrate your aim at the beginning of each battle. |

1. Couple things you can do, 1 aim ahead some people are muscle memories into their strafe patterns try to nail them on the apex of their strafes.
2 Another hard counter is a second partner strafing is only really good in 1v1 it cannot starve off an entire fire team's worth of shooting.
3 Force them to run straight. Withdraw, advanced, whatever use the environment so it becomes impossible for them to strafe.
4 Explosives
5. Vehicles.
6. Counter Strafe, out dance and out gun them, you'll do fine. |

What Try_harder was probably trying to say is that you should -always- be strafing in a game like dust. If you're standing still for pretty much any reason whatsoever, you're doing it wrong. When you're hacking something, dance a bit. You can actually move quite a bit without stopping the hack. When you're using pretty much any weapon in a firefight, dance.
When you're using a sniper, jiggle while you survey the field for targets, then ADS and pop off your shot, and jiggle some more.
That is pretty much lesson 1 in "How not to die in Dust". |

Because it's true.
They're VERY broad conditions, but if you don't fit at least one of them, you can't "abuse" strafing in DUST.
NOTE: it's not really abuse, which is why I ""ed it. |

If you're like me, who can't hit moving targets with an AR, just specs into the MD. Those cute dance moves won't mean anything anymore. It requires predictions though, especially against scouts.
If you're a Heavy, HMG works too, if you're close enough.
Or you can bait them to come around the corner, and blow them up with the RE.
Outside of that, you're just going to have to practice. I know it's hard, I still can't shot an AR to save my life. |

also try mass dravers for the really quick ones. Assault drivers just need to land in their Zip code to deal dammage. |

The simple answer would be to just ask CCP to nerf strafing. They are obviously abusing the latency issues... so the only logical path would be to make the controls be even more sluggish and clunky.

There's some good advice here and there's some not as good, but it is what it is. But they all forget to mention that you might want to aim at shoulder level across the upper torso. It increases the chance of catching their ankles and feet if they jump, as well as possible head shots from hipfire recoil induced bullet spread.
Of course if you're great at keeping your horizontal aim traversal centered, just aim for the head. Then if they jump you will hit their feet.
Otherwise the only real viable tip is to either change to AOE weapons or practice a lot on your aiming skills. |

How to beat strafing?
Wait for CCP to fix latency.
Until then, stay aware, dictate engagements at your weapon's optimal range and retreat to your optimal range when in danger. Keep cover between you and your opponent and ADS or crouch when you can. If you're running and gunning like rambo on crack, then you're doing it wrong. This isn't CoD as much as people want it to be. |
