Does AR sharpshooter increase AR damage at all ranges? My own experience suggests it does.
I want to increase short range damege with AR. I already have proficiency 4, but only have sharpshooter 2. It would cost less to upgrade sharpshooter, but will it make a difference at shorter ranges? |

So, I assume you mean assault rifle proficiency vs light weapon sharpshooter. My understanding is that sharpshooter will not improve your damage at all, except insofar as you can now hit targets you couldn't hit before once they were out of range. As you can see, the description for sharpshooter only lists a range increase. If you can verify that damage goes up, I would very much like to know, but I'm guessing this is just a perception thing.
So if you want more damage, I think assault rifle proficiency or weaponry are your best choices.
Edit: or carry an SMG or similar for a sidearm and use that close range! |

You do increased damage within optimal range. I believe it is 110% (total damage, not bonus). So no, it will increase damage "at short ranges" assuming by short range you mean within your optimal range. It will however make "short range" a little bit longer. After playing the closed BETA for something like 6 months I trained Sharpshooter V and SS Proficiency I for the first time last week. It is most definitely an incredibly useful skill. Train it up, especially if you already have AR proficiency trained up to at least level 3 for the officer weapons. Ideally you should at least get sharpshoot IV long before that though. |

Sharpshooter increases the maximum optimal range, not just the maximum range. Optimal range is where you are getting 100% weapon damage. (Or, in the case of the AR, 110% to shield) |

like 0 Try harder has said, it increases your Optimal range as well. meaning your dealing more damage in two situations
1) in fights that were previously just outside your optimal range you will now be doing more damage 2) in fights outside your previous maximum range you will now be doing more damage
Its a DPS increase based on positioning |

(Or, in the case of the AR, 110% to shield) AR's are hybrid weapons so it's same damage to shield and armor. Wasn't sure about a damage bonus actually. Regardless, optimal range is where you will do maximum damage with or without some extra bonus. Train sharpshooter.

I am a bit puzzled by some things said in this thread, but particularly this. I wasn't sure, but I am guessing that what is being said is that once you're outside optimal, damage falls off but does not disappear immediately. So, you can increase your damage by raising sharpshooter since you are doing more damage to targets you can currently only just hit, and by doing some damage to some targets you can't currently reach.
But the OP stated, "I want to increase short range damege with AR". And so I'm not sure why training sharpshooter is the right suggestion to help fulfil this desire. It seems to me, as I suggested, that AR proficiency and weaponry are the skills to raise to increase short range damage.
One reply here stated that increasing sharpshooter 'will however make "short range" a little bit longer'. But it's not clear what the OP had in mind. If he's thinking of close quarter maps and wants to do more damage when he runs around a corner and is face to face with an enemy, sharpshooter isn't the right skill. If by "short range" he simply meant, "range at which I'm doing maximum damage", then this might be the right answer. But it seems to me that this is not likely to be the OP's original meaning. |

If you look at someone with armor in close range, it's 90% or something like that. I forgot the exact amount for armor, but it is less. Someone said this in irc, and I double checked in game. You can too ^.^
Although it is a little odd to get someone into armor and then just move around trying to target them w/o shooting lol. |

Be ready for the changes in the skill system coming on the 6th as several of these skills are going to be removed/sub-divided/changed. In essence invest in what you'll use today and prepare to reassess once the respec comes.
