Did I just blow your mind?
Mercenaries are already hired out to fulfill the military role, but why not the Police role as well? NPC Corp hires you to solve a PvE mystery. You get to inspect the crime scene and look at clues. Once you find some, you follow the lead, and infiltrate installations and factories looking for documents. At the end, you get to duke it out with the bad guys.
Another cool twist is spies. This is where (because it is PvE) spies can get loyalty points. You're at the end with your partner, you've found the culprit. But you like the culprit so you turn on your buddy and get rewarded by the bad guys, who you like.
Inspector Bojo has a nice ring to it. |

The last thing you want is to make the people on these forums detectives. Beating up old ladies and stealing their handbags in the name of gathering evidence seems like it would tarnish the image of the empires. |

It seems like a viable idea, but it's hard to generate mysteries by computer. Although team and solo infiltration PvE missions seem easier to implement. +1 |

It doesn't have to be hyper complex, just an easy swap this for that system.
CPU starts with basic template:
Crime > [ Assassination, Counterfeit Weapons, Theft ]
Clues > [ Note, Logo, Weapon ]
Leads > [ Locations, People, Companies ]
Culrpits > [ Company, Terrorists, Pirates, Faction ]
You know, where it just puzzle pieces together a mystery to solve.

I don't think armoured clone soldiers would make good detectives.
Swat type jobs and infiltrate to place a bug or capture a fugitive or gather intel/evidence on a criminal organization would be jobs the police might higher mercs though.
This would also be easier to do then mysteries, something like the EvE mission agent system could cover it fine. |

I honestly think the majority of missions would end with dust mercs killing everything in a 5km radius with a heart beat....
Why solve crimes when you can just as easily kill everything... |

I don't think it makes too much sense. So I'll give a lil example.
CreoDron hires you out to investigate some counterfeit weapons. They give you some of the evidence to look at (like in viewer at the market). You look closely and notice that the magazine is not CreoDron design. You note this and a computer brings up files in regard to that magazine design. You discover that there was a patent fallout between CreoDron and Duvolle. This lead brings you to the door step of a Duvolle engineer, who designed the original magazine. You break into his estate and swipe some invoices, and find that there have been numerous shipments of unnamed goods to a criminal organization. You present this information to the client. They believe the evidence surmounts to an undeniable culprit, and give you a small task force of mercenaries on loan to wipe out the counterfeit weapons operation.

I'm all for innovation in this game but... this one seems a bit out of place. Besides' there's going to be plenty of spying, espionage, and meta game drama just like EVE once Dust picks up speed. Too bad there's no mining or manufacturing implemented yet. I used to love bumping miners... |
