This idea is an attempt to transpose smartbombs from Eve into a Dust equivalent. I envision this weapon coming in two variants to represent damage types:
"Kinetic Damage" Variant: Weapon has spin up time similar to the forge gun. When charged, the heavy can bring it down onto the ground, causing a large shockwave that does decent damage (200 in a radius of 10m, decreases with distance) and causes knockback. The knockback can be scaled to suit size/weight and will affect lighter suits more. This is intended to allow them to actually escape further blasts, whereas heavier suits would most likely not be knocked outside of the blast radius.
"EM Damage" Variant: Identical operation to the kinetic damage variant. However, it causes no knockback and does major shield damage (500 in a 10m radius), but only slight armor damage (50 in a 10m radius). Also breaks the user's shields.
This weapon would be used to defend small chokepoints and null cannons, not to mention close-quarters use against vehicles. It would offer the heavy a way to become a living obstacle, especially with a large buffer tank. Friendly damage is something that would have to be balanced. Also the weapon should be of Amarr design.
Not sure how a Thermal or Explosive one would work, nor how ammo/heat buildup would be incorporated.
I want to stress that it shouldn't look like a "traditional" hammer/sledgehammer mostly to avoid comparison with giant hammers from other games. I imagine this weapon looking more like a very large post driver. Here's a cooler looking one.

But I also think it's an awesome idea.
I can't believe I completely forgot about the impact hammer. Never heard of Armored Core
I want to emphasize that although it would fill the role of a heavy "melee weapon", the hammer is intended to be an AoE wepaon, hence it not being a giant sledge. |

As much as I love Warhammer 40k, I was specifically trying to deviate from the hammer in Space Marine (and also the crappy gravity hammer in Halo), mostly because a giant sledge starts bringing fantastic elements into a sci-fi game. I would much prefer something that looks hi-tech and relevant. The typhoon system is a great example.
Bayonets on tanks? Yes, please! Sansha tanks anyone? |

Or maybe it goes onto a currently non-existent specialized heavy suit as a tactical module? I've been thinking of proposing a kind of heavy-defense suit that's low on offense but can absorb massive damage, specifically for direct advances on entrenched positions. I was thinking of the potential Titan dropsuit when this entered my mind. |

This is not a melee weapon. it is an explosive pulse coming from the wielder. The weapon itself is just to transpose it from the Eve equivalent. |
