TL;DR: There is very little information in this post apart from the advice to run a virus scan.
As part of an investigation into a news tip I cannot substantiate, I've heard claims that a DUST 514 player has used malicious software in an effort to gain control of the computer of another player to attack them for reasons pertaining to the metagame.
Despite my decision not to publish this story unless more evidence is uncovered, I feel a brief "Hey, everyone, do a virus scan" is never inappropriate anyway and in the event that the claim has some substance to it, people have been warned.
Hey, everyone, do a virus scan.

The link between the infection and the subsequent control of email is unconfirmed. While it doesn't hurt to advise caution and regular computer scans, this is posted more as a precaution than an evidence-based suggestion to be worried. |

I received an email that seems to match with Mithridates VI's warning.
I never will reveal a sources identity, even when it comes to questionable behavior. I have no interest in a relationship with the individual in question and never made contact with them.
Here is the message I received a few days ago.
--- "I have a piece of information about a certain well loved/hated corporation that could potentially be the biggest drama bomb in the galaxy.
Do you want a little taste?
"I'm sure you're aware of the [omitted for sources privacy]
Also:
"We've been able to gain access to his email by methods we do not wish to go into detail in and plan to release the information"
That is just the tiniest sliver of this delicious piece of information.
Let me know what you think." ---
I'm not interested in drama or nonsense like this, and I don't mind losing this source/contact by posting this. Just be aware it does appear that members of the community are going after others personal information (if you believe the email, I personally don't have any clue if it's substantiated).
I suggest vigilance just in case it's true. |

Remote deploy keylogger/trojans...yawn.
Fixes:
I use Linux Operating Systems k. Download it and install Mint or Ubuntu....k.
Best antivirus is a virtual enviroment.
Run a virtual machine.
www.virtualbox.org
Thats free and now that you have that install a virtual windows Operating System on top of your Linux host.
Make an .iso of your Win 7 or Win 8 system.
I use IMGburn.
K.
Start up Ubuntu or Mint. Start up Virtualbox.
Create Virtual machine. Give it 20 gigs.
Install Win 7 or Win 8 .iso
Bootup virtual machine then run your apps.
Remember most folks have at least three virtual machines.
In case of a virus its delete virtual machine and start up another clean virtual machine ten seconds later.

Big assumption here. YOu assume that that email refers to his PC email not his in-game email. His in-game email is much more likely and easy to do.
1) Get his PSN details by guessing or just simply asking for it. 2) Someone in his house, brother, sister, flatmate, wife, husband to screen shot the guys in game email screen when he is AFK.

Lol, what are you basing your dismissal on?
You'll note that at every available opportunity I've downplayed the dramatic effect of this warning, given no credence to the surrounding drama and merely offered a suggestion that players perform what should be a routine check-up of their machines while once again explaining that there's no need to be concerned but yeah, it's a conspiracy.

Er, I don't have any website users. I just post stuff that's happening in DUST, like this. It's related to DUST because players in DUST are allegedly attempting to gain control of the computers/email of other players in DUST to effect changes in the DUST metagame.
They don't have a subforum for that. |

I'm pretty sure they frown on misuse of the reporting functions but you're totally within your rights to do so and see what happens. I know you have no issues with being banned and returning, so we'll allow the little power trip you get from crusading about the forums to continue unhindered because it's not really significant enough to warrant any further action.
Trolling a simple warning thread is a bit silly, though. |

Trolling a simple warning thread is a bit silly, though. As well as being off topic, and you now personally attacking me:

Okay, okay, I'll give you the attention. The pertinent information is available in the first post, so it won't ruin the thread.
>>Rumor threads and posts which are based off no actual solid information and are designed to either troll or annoy other users will be locked and removed.
For a thread to be eligible for locking and removal, it must both be based off no actual solid information AND either designed to troll or designed to annoy.
One of these is easily testable, is the thread based on actual solid information? No, it's based on unsubstantiated claims supported by antivirus logs and similar details which cannot be shared without breaking other forum rules and the details of which are not important enough that a "check your computer if in doubt" doesn't cover it. The information it's based on doesn't need to be provided according to the forum rules.
The second element of a lockable and removable post is that it is designed to troll or annoy. Is this post designed for either of these things? No, it's designed to inform the community about the possibility of some players taking the metagame much too far.
The AND operator requires that both of the operands are true and they are not, so your assertions that the thread is in violation of the forum rules are unwarranted and not constructive (so in violation of rule 22). Your berations are in violation of rule 4, I suspect your ban evasion is in violation of rule 27 and I felt your implication that I considered the forums a play pen defamatory, so in violation of rule 34. Reported. |

Mith, don't make yourself look like an idiot. You seem like a smart guy but that troll is laughing at you right now because he's stringing you along.
Edit all your posts so all of them are blank.
If snarky pricks like this won't accept information or warnings then don't warn them.
Edit all your posts, don't give anyone a warning if they're not appreciative of it. Then when/if somebody does get a virus they'll wish that they were warned.
And to the troll, yes I'm SURE this isn't DUST related. Like you say. Nothing to do with DUST whatsoever. |

Well since you're a linux user, you do realize that that one version linux has a nice collection of linux and email sever vulnerabilities to exploit other users, the email server vulnerabilities is the one I be a bit more worried about but chances are the guy doing this is a script kiddie and not a real hacker. |
