Discuss:
Will mechanics allow mercenaries of New Eden to partake in methods of wealth that exist in Eve?
For instance, how would Dust 514 mercenaries fulfill a role in a pirate corp? How could mercs prey on the weak or ambush like pirates would in Eve? I can see Dust Mercs being semi applicable to all kinds of corps. But just not pirates. How could mercs lie in wait?

The same way EvE players do, holding players for ransom, just we'll be doing by districts rather than individuals. That IS a nice planet...sure be terrible if a Titan decided it was in the way.. |

EVE pirate loads up 16 mercs on to his ship. All lay in wait. Pirate ship attacks unsuspecting victim, mercs board said victim kill the crew (and any potitial mercs hired to gaurd the ship) and steal the entire ship and cargo.

Well, we've already seen a lot of discussion about how some corps plan to "Tora! Tora! Tora!" all the time in order to make money.
The plan goes, IIRC:
Attack once, win. Get biomass payout from a fully laden district. Attack someone else. |

Pillage approach? Interesting. Have you ran all the maths and included the multiple strikes it takes to down even an undefended district? Or does the thinking rely on probabilities of the flipped districts not getting turned back the next day? |

I wonder if we will have an option to do something akin to AFK Cloaking in districts.
I do however really really want some way to participate in piracy in Dust, even if it is only interdicting cargo shipping between Districts on the same planet (whether that interdiction happens on land, on sea or in the skies IDC). |

I would like to see a raid system in place- pirates come in, take some stuff from the district, and leave.
Speaking of dust and pirates- the blood raiders get their ships like that by flying into planets. |

Okay that does make it look better, but one thing I can't see working out are traps. I want to see some one's Admiral Ackbar face when they get ambushed by mercs.

I haven't run the maths myself, I just remember people talking about how it could profitable to attack districts with high clone counts without trying to actually conquer the district, just trying for a high kill rate. |

Please no, Piracy needs to be more than just about KDR. There needs to be some ransom involved, it can't just be for the killmail otherwise we'll have nothing but simple-minded pirates who just kill for the mails.
Piracy in Dust should be more about interdiction of assets, not attacking just to kill lots of clones, but interdicting clone deliveries or the shipment of industrial goods from one district to another.
Personally, I think that Piracy should be PvPvE, think of it like this.
Say for example, we can extract X material from a planet, but in order for it to be processed into Y material, it needs to be shipped to another district. This shipping could occur via air, ship, train, truck, whatever, though it should be Drone controlled. Pirates attack the drone controlled convoy and the drones fend them off as best they can until clone reinforcements arrive to defend their assets. If the pirates are quick enough to loot and flee before reinforcements arrive or are able to fight off the defenders, then they get their loot. Otherwise, they DIAF, either way, it is better than just simply being a pirate for the mails/tears. |

What about Commerce Infrastructure that can be tapped into? For instance, mobilizing commodities from one district to another with a space port, they'd need to cross the distance, at which pirates could run down and take it (without contract) and fight PvE. It would turn into PvP if the the district get's administered a defend contract by the owner. Now the pirates have to initiate an attack (similar to PC) but instead of kill deathmatch yada yada, it would be a different game mode. One sided search and retrieve. Mercs taking the loot and fighting the defenders.
Another idea I had was Mercenaries in space (still about Pirates) Now this part is just pure imagination but bare with me.
Mercenaries lie in wait on an Asteroid belt. This part is more of a Free Roam FPS because the merc is not guaranteed any action, but for the sake of purpose let's say there is. Dust Pirates are chilling in a sector of an asteroid belt when a ship get's within range. So they use little booster things to get them near then they use handheld weapons to tackle the ore transport. The transport unveils little drones and Dust Pirates have to go through a fight with the drones. Now they defeat the drones. What can they do to the transport? Stasis weapons immobilize the ship and Dust Pirates can manually hack the ship to jettison the cargo. Dust Pirates cannot destroy the ship with their weapons, merely play with it. However, these Dust Pirates are teamed up with Eve Pilots, who (after being notified that the ship has been temporarily immobilized, stasis webified) can swoop in for the kill and salvage.
Let's throw a wildcard.
Same scenario, but this ore transport has Mobile Merc Quarters on board. So it is prepped with 10 Mercenaries on board. So now, the transport ejects both mercs and Drones. Together they crush the pirate opposition. Now they are paid directly out of the corp wallet. You may be saying "What?!", but the mercs didn't just jump out and fight. The pilot put up a defend contract when the pirates were spotted. So the mission completion grants them their money as part of a contract.
I'm just getting ahead of myself, but someday when this game matures, I'm going to be a pirate. |

Piracy in DUST can be a lot of things. If CCP implements player-owned Supply Depots/lockers that get deployed on the field, it would expedite the theft of dropsuits and equipment. If the hacking we already have access to goes on a grander scale, we could potentially get involved in disrupting field equipment (IE: Suit radar, etc).
DUST has potential, but there's always going to be limitations in the hardware/code/platforms between DUST and EVE. We may not get to board player owned ships and perform hostile takeovers, but we could one day get to the point we can invade stations and put them in lockdown to prevent capsuleers from docking or undocking. In that way, we could lock down entire corporations in EVE and hold HVT's hostage for exorbitant amounts of ISK.
We could also get involved in EVE's PI process. DUST Operatives might be able to get involved with overall production in PI facilities. Some Nullsec Bloc is producing their own fuel on planets? Invade their PI systems to slow or halt their production facilities altogether. Interrupt PI facilities by destroying supply lines or plants on the planet surface.
DUST's interaction with EVE pilots will always be limited though. The above is pure thought/hope/conjecture. |

you touch on it in your last post but you really need free roam FPS to make piracy truly work.
Raiding parties onboard ships are kind silly unless its a specific game mode limited to hand hand combat or the like i think. Unless its a titan i want to board and raid a titan by sending a low orbit flyer from the ground send it to space breach said titan which should require its own dust mercenaries on standby to wormhole in.
Now a battles is being fought on the ground, the air, and inside a large ship which either gets destroyed, or taken over at which point the capsuleer is dead and gone and a friendly capsuleer is wormholed in. (but yea that will make people freak if you let that much influence in a F2P on a P2P). |
