'As much as I find CoD laughably horrible. I think its needed. Not every shooter can be original or different or even good. Like most forums of entertainment there is a spectrum of stuff. CoD just happens to land on the below average, ****** side of that spectrum. Its equivalent to Hannah Montana, Vanilla Ice, Milli Vanilli or Justin Bieber. Plus, what do you expect from a game that spends more money on marketing then actually making it? The real problem started when everyone in the industry started trying to copy CoD and make easy, instant gratification games. That's when innovation died and CoD helped set the genre back ten years.'

Concord needs to stay out of our ground battles. If a situation in space has reached such a hectic poi.t where we need to be dropped in, then it's already too late for concord to take part in the situation.

I have been saying what the article from PCGamer is saying for years but everyone says that I don't know what I'm talking about. Their comeback is always "Then why is it so popular?" and I always say "Popular does not translate into good." The article is correct, fps games have made the games too easy, thoughtless and without any type of soul.
I like hardcore games and I like winning. Winning in a game like cod does not have the feel of winning in a game like DUST. Conversely loosing does not feel the same either. The other day I was playing on the Ashland map and someone drove a tank onto the platform where A is. I don't know why but it made me so mad I switched suits and died three times trying to kill the tank. I did it with my logi AV fit and ended up killing the tank and gunners. I have never been that mad at a person on a game. It felt good to destroy the tank and it felt good to win. Current fps don't feel that way, I get bored with games that have no reward for winning and no pain for loosing.
Thankfully, we have DUST to cure our lust for blood, conquest and tears. Everything in New Eden is bigger and better, even tears. |

Competitive on CoD is a whole different ball game to pubs. Pubs itself is ok, but most people I know play it for MLG etc. I come from R:FoM originally and if they re-released it or made a new one that was just like it, I'd have no problem spending 3+ years playing only that. |

It leaves out the part where something good continues on to something else and is only popular because of the name tied to it.

cod is the number one reason why 514 is having trouble:
the players can't play it because it's not easy mode garbage like cod.
but that will change:
all the codbois have to do is take out the tampons and show the damage that's been done and ccp will come nerf 514 down to some codboi easy mode garbage for them so they can finally play it.
just a matter of time.

The name is the only thing they have to keep the players. Everyone plays hard for about three months and drops it when they're at the prestige they want. There is no risk and the rewards are shallow. People pay hundreds of dollars for a piece of junk plastic case and a remote control plane that is made of foam. These same people would not pay $5 for that junk if it didn't say cod in the side. Developers could drop the same game under a different name and it would bomb because it isn't cod. |

Obviously if a casual, boring, no-skill game like COD can have $100,000+ prize pool tournaments multiple times a year then a super innovative, amazingly immersive FPS masterpiece like DUST514 should have at least that, or have plans for that when it comes out of beta right? This game is going to be relevant from a competitive perspective, right guys? We're totally better than those filthy casuals, right guys? We can blame all our problems on something unrelated to ourselves, right guys? Nah idiot. |

You know what the absolute worst part about CoD is? Aside from it being the cancer that's slowly killing any and all creativity within the entire FPS genre forcing other, older, established franchises to fall flat by imitating a flawed system that grants instant gratification.
Their fanbase seems to be entirely brainwashed into thinking that CoD is the standard to what every FPS should be.
Example: I convinced a "hardcore" CoD playing friend to try Dust, which I later regret. It was like being a chauffeur to an old yenta. All he could focus on was "This isn't like CoD, so it sucks. Why can't I rack up kills like in CoD? How come my CoD tactics aren't working?" Every little thing down to the reload speed, UI, having to actually ADS, dropsuit fitting... every... little... thing... The slightest bit of originality or deviation made him completely uncomfortable. Eventually, his bubble of instant gratification and inflated stats from spawn camping was shattered at the end of a double stacked Duvolle. Poor guy rage quitted, defriended me from PSN and went back to "Cult" of Duty with extra doses of Kool-Aid. Worst part is, he still owes me $20.

We have had some tournaments but they were not $100k. There are lots of things that have tournaments and that doesn't mean anything to anyone but the people who play. There are cup stacking tourneys that you can play in if you want to be win some cash. Yes, cod takes some skill to play well but it is still reward less and caters to casual players. Complex games are fun and cod is not complex.
There is no story, no risk, little rewards and they are all copies of older versions of the same game. The problem should be placed more on the players than cod because the gamers are the reason it is dull. In a generation of save whenever and no loss in video games why do we expect anything less than a bland-everyday-casual shooter.
Finally, this game is competitive and there is room for casual mercs too. As time goes by we will see more and more content and the game will become more competitive. DUST is just an infant learning the ropes and as with children you cannot predict what will happen and when. No other game does as much as we do right now and no other game has as much potential as we do now. |

But then who enforces the redzone? I always thought it was Concord tech that is built into the dropsuit. It keeps the battles constrained to a contested area and prevents mercs from wandering off and killing some poor dirt farmers mutant sheep or driving a tank into a nearby town and shooting up the local strip mall... |

CCP games are not sports events. They are sandboxes. The entire trend of turning all of video gaming into something like a weekly bowling league is deplorable. Making "competitive" the only criteria by which to judge a game is exactly the sort of mind numbingly dull and narrow constraint that a lot of us are trying to get away from by playing this game.
If there are competitive events within EVE and Dust they need to make sense within the game world. They cannot be immune, set aside, or protected from the wider workings of the game world. If your corporation does not have the money, power, trust, or any other assets to run a blood sport tournament then they should not be able to host one.
If a group of players decides that they do not like your tournament and puts together a posse to crash the party and ruin everyone's fun then so be it.
The kind of competitiveness I am looking for in this game is so much broader and deeper than seeing the entire game as some kind of football match. I want to play Dust as if it were a living breathing universe. Some players may choose to put together sporting type tourneys within that universe. But they should only be one option among countless options for how to play this game.

This is really obvious every time you play through a couple matches. And what most people mistakenly mean when they throw around "competitive" is that they want to have a compressed skill gap. They want to feel like they can get kills without really having to work for them. ANd that is the opposite of competitive.

Thankfully, we have DUST to cure our lust for blood, conquest and tears. Everything in New Eden is bigger and better, even tears. This is a fine example of a central tenet that CCP is using to guide Uprising: Making It Matter
This exemplifies for this player what it is about DUST ( compared to other games) that makes it all matter on a real, complex and visceral level.
I have this same kind of reaction to many situations and circumstances in DUST. Given the open beta's unpolished potential, I have high hopes that CCP will continue to develop this game with this kind of motivation in mind.
