No, he's thinking of Dust. There's no way they aren't going to make money with this -- it's not a charity. And by making the use of aur tempting enough -- providing enough reasons to use it -- they will create a slow drain. The free-to-play model can't be sustained if there's any way to turn ISK into aur or back so CCP must keep something in the mechanics or resources as a reason for you to eventually spend money on the game. |

Are you going to make more money from a small group of players buying the UVT, or is this actually costing you money by turning away potential investors (aurum or boosters)?
As a former EVE player, years ago, that was my number one turn-off to EVE. Console games have a different kind of player and a different kind of market. Complex menu systems, anti-social defaults (things that keep you from communicating with your 'buddies', things that keep you from getting together with them) and SP grinding are going to turn people away.
I totally agree with you. |

Ok, I know "this is New Eden", but the whole point of this game is to NOT have as massive a barrier to entry as EVE. How did they connect the mic to the PS3 in the first place if they can't even check the menus?
What other console games create artificial barriers social interaction? Name another PS3 game that makes you tweak menu settings for what most think are the basic capabilities?
As another poster said, if all you want to try to do is capture more money from existing EVE players, good luck thinking that the majority of your EVE players are going to spend even more time on the console. They aren't. You are looking for a different audience. And they have different expectations.
Linux market share is about 1%. Why? a lot of that same kind of 'if they are too stooopid to figure it out, we don't need them' attitude. OS X is about 7% and Windows is still the vast majority because they design for the masses and not some niche: they want their product easy to use and they put in the features that their users ask for.
If CCP doesn't adopt the features that their console users are asking for, it'll die off before CCP has a chance to recoop their costs. They need a big change in the menuing system and some of the defaults like voice. |
