Humor me, I've never played EvE, why are the Goons important?
They seem like a lot of talk and no action as a far as Dust goes.

They have a tech monopoly (basically they own all the materials needed to make ships) and therefore have uncontested control over all of Eve's economy, meaning that they basically control Eve. You'll see more of them as Eve-dust ISK transfers open up and we get a player run market.

Are they the ones who lost $17K worth of EvE ships comparied to the othersides $1k losses in the recent battle that messed with the EvE servers?

As it is, you can't. Eve is a numbers game that heavily favors those in power. Goonswarm and their Allies in HBC are by far the largest and richest faction in Eve right now. You'd need to amass much more money and players from out of nowhere to unthrone them.
