I have just trained to level 1 Pilot and have started to practise in the militia Viper. That thing is so hard to fly! I can go up and down, or crash; but struggle a lot to go forward or sideway, or in fact finding my bearings. In one of the smaller map, I keep flying into the red zone.
For those more skilled and accomplished pilots out there, would you be kind enough to offer me some advice on flying? And how to avoid ... chasing in front of everyone. Anything from basic operation to advanced maneuver would be most appreciated.
Many thanks! |

Just keep practicing with militia. Think of it as helicopter, nose down means forward, nose up backwards. Try keeping it stable by move the nose. You turn the nose left or right (yaw) with the look button. After that try landing it gently. Best place to practice is thr skirmish redline. |

This is a rough graphic to show how the vehicle will rotate with each stick which may help in visualising or feeling where the ship will go. |

Personally, I thought the Gorgon was a bit easier to fly. |

So basically nose down+L1 (i.e. flying UP) = forwards; nose up+L1 = backwards.
Still reading the links...
But may I ask a few more questions meanwhile?
Do I have to keep pressing L1 and L2 to adjust altitude or does it hover at the right height once I get there?
Can I strafe with a Dropship?
How to install an 'Up-link' on a Dropship?
Many thanks once again! |

The dropship will maintain its altitude if its level, instead of tilted.
You can by tilting your dropship the the side to gain momentum, however doing this will cause it to lower in altitude, so you may need to tap or hold L1 to compensate if you wish to maintain altitude.
I think the Eryx and Prometheus have CRUs (spawn-points) in them already, alternatively you should be able to install the Mobile CRU vehicle module provided you have a free high slot and the PG/CPU. |

You can strafe by rolling (left analog) a bit to the left or right. If you strafe too much you can go 180 degrees to the side and crash so be careful lol. |

First off, to practice you really need to SLOW DOWN and get comfortable with stabilizing. Don't just mash into the accelerator, come up off the ground by feathering L1 and MICRO adjust to stay level. Furthermore, to go right, don't jam down on the joystick to the right, give it a light touch and let her drift. Practicing with careful and deliberate movement and working your way to higher speed maneuvers will help you more than trying to zoom around the field.
To circle strafe, give the left joystick a touch in one direction and hold, then compensate the tilting with the right stick in the opposite direction and give it a little gas (L1). If you practice it and learn the feel, you can twist, turn, slide, spin, and strafe fairly effortlessly. |

Thank you all!!
I need to practise more indeed.
Before they release something like akin to an Apache, I think my goal is to be a mobile CRU, observation post, and a support gunship.
After getting some basic movement skills, I think I will practise more on doing strafe circle: I think that gives the gunners on both side a better shooting view. I have been a gunner once or twice and ended up looking at the sky most of the time...
So my ship will probably be a tankie one with decent speed. Is shield tank a good choice?
And which guns should I equip? |

This thread should probably be moved to the training grounds at this point.
Shield tank would work, you'll be faster then, however probably somewhat less sturdy, in terms of turrets, I honestly don't know what to suggest, probably blasters i guess? Someone else with more experience may be able to give more advice on this. I feel I would be remiss if i didn't tell you that dropships are considered by most to be terrible at the moment due to the fact that they aren't viable ways of earning WP (and therefore ISK) and are thus not financially sustainable. Hopefully they get some love in the uprising build. |

Welcome to the ranks of DUST pilots!
At present flying is a very expensive hobby with no reward, but the next build promises to rectify that injustice (or so we ever hopeful pilots assume based on CCP information).
If you have just started you may not accumulate enough SP to build a survivable dropship before the Uprising build, but that's no reason to wait. In fact a simple Viper will allow you to gain personal flying skills that will be needed when flying becomes a sustainable occupation.
I suggest you practice deep in your spawn in Skirmish where you can avoid combat as you learn. |

That is my line of thinking too: may as well start messing around before the more serious and useful stuff are out; by then, I can be of some use at the start.
Flying is indeed expensive: lost a few ships by crashing stupidly. But that is the price to pay I suppose. |

Go cheap. Get BPO modules if you have AUR to spare, or do without.
Practice at slow speed. Practice precision maneuvers such as moving around obstacles and spot landings.
Practice a rock solid hover by thinking of balancing a glass of water.
Eventually you will get the hang of the controls and wish they were more responsive.
Oh, don't call in a ship if your side is redlined. Most maps let the enemy fire deep into your spawn and they will try to destroy you if the rest of your team isn't out there making it hard for them. |

this +1milion, this is written by one of the best DS pilots in the game, and just reading it will help your piloting 100%.
tho right now DS are pointless, hopefully DS will get some love next build, the assault DS next build will be a big help, but there will need to be some more done. |
