I just played my first few games here, and I'm just bewildered. My friends recommended this game (and am playing as an alt on my brother's account), and seeing this beta forum shows it has a pretty decent cult following, but from the games I've played it is the worst thing I've ever seen in my life.
Joined my first game after playing around with the "SP" I was given and promptly ran out of money. Joined a game with a shotgun (for obvious reasons) and found that 90% of the map was open areas, which forced me to either camp or run with my pistol sidearm, I chose the latter, and found the pistol killed enemies faster at medium range than my shotgun did at close range. To add to the uselessness of my shotgun, the second I fired it, the sound crapped out and stuttered for the rest of the game. Every time I tried to fire my shotgun, the muzzle flash made my frame-rate have a seizure. The reloading sequence for my shotgun was bugged, because whenever I sat and watched as my character pushed six shells into the clip, when I went into battle I only fired once before I ran out of ammo.
Second game was no different, instead of crapping out after I shot my shotgun, the sound started out already stuttering. I met some people with black armor that could survive two point-blank shots before turning and depleting my health in nil seconds. For some reason there were two or three team-mates standing in the big spaceship that served as our spawn-point, but they were never kicked for inactivity, just making the already skewed game worse.
In my next couple of games, I found that my shotgun rarely if ever killed enemies in one shot, it usually left them with zero health, requiring an extra shot to finish them off, or, more often a team-mate would shoot him once with a rifle and take my kill points. I was constantly run over by cars, the enemy often called in big tanks that half of my team shot with shoulder-fired rocket launchers to no effect.
Coming back to the issue of frame-rate lag, it got worse with every game, to the point where I had to shut down my system, and here I am now writing this article. For the record, I have played every other popular online game on this PS3 with zero lag or connection issues, up until this point.
So........what? Why do so many people like this game when I find I can't even play it without getting frozen screens that last for five seconds at a time, at which point they unfreeze and I am dead? I never even got to see how well the actual shooting worked, because the only time I killed people was when I snuck up behind them or finished off weak enemies with my pistol. |

It's not a "noob friendly" game and the tutorials don't really tell you what anything does, just how to get it.
I was originally in the closed beta, but I ended up quitting because I had similar frustrations. Took me and my brother sitting around in the different menus for ******* ever to even start figuring out how stuff works. |

I can't really say anything about screen freezing and lag, I haven't had any of those troubles. For the sound, I've had that happen, but after restarting the client it works fine most of the time.
I can't say anything about the shotgun, haven't used one myself. Been killed by them plenty of times though.
But for the most part, starting out fresh can be really hard in this game. The black suits are high end gear and you having low skills can make it very difficult to kill them.
But other than your hard ware issues and lag, all I can really say, and not trying to sound like an a**, but welcome to New Eden. |

Nah, not really. I personally play for the mouse/keyboard support.
This game is either really fun, or really awful. It's still beta, so its obviously going to get better. The biggest problem now is the lack of really eloquent descriptions of exactly how everything works. That and the ridiculously bad balancing. |

With a Shotgun against equal tier gear, unless you're Heavy-hunting, you should see one-shot kills more often than not when you're in close quarters.
If you're taking 2 shots, then the other player has higher-quality gear and/or better skill training than you.
I run with a LOT of SPs invested in Weaponry to increase damage, and a few into Shotgun Operations, and I usually run with a Militia Shotgun. I can one-shot the majority of non-Prototype suits, and almost every Scout ever when I'm within 10m of the target.
As range increases, damage drops off, partly through an actual reduction in damage, and partly because of the spread allowing more of the blast to miss.
Until you've trained your Shotgun Operations to at least level 2, Shotguns are pretty unreliable weapons.
Also, if quitting and restarting doesn't resolve the framerate and sound issues, then you probably have a corrupt install, because while the game doesn't have the best framerate, you're describing a MUCH worse scenario than what anyone else I know has experienced. |

Some of your problem happens to be in your own choices. You complained because you used a shotgun, but you could've used a default AR build without camping. Lag is a server issue, if it isn't a problem on your side, then there's too much traffic on the server side. The AFK Camping is an ongoing issue that you can check in the Feedback section, and yea its stupid. If you're getting run over by vehicles, then you need to learn to jump to the side, or not walk out in the middle of the road. Tanks are a viable threat in this game, but can be taken out with teamwork. If they aren't being taken out when half a team is on them, then that's a superb tanker.
This game is a Beta. There are no claims otherwise. For that matter, in all your other "popular online games" how many of them have patches? How many had issues in them on release day? This game is loved for its potential, true, but in all fairness, it is not an easy game. It has an EVE style learning curve (Google it if you don't know what that means) and will eat you if you are unprepared. But it is fun because it has more potential than any other beta I've seen. |

How did you lose all your money in the first couple of matches? The starter fits you get are completely free.
If you're using militia gear without skills driving it you're not going to perform as well as a character with 3 million SP and advanced fits unless you're some sort of savant. Even if you don't get any kills, stick to the free fits at first and you should be clearing 130k ISK per match.
As far as your lag issues go, is your router showing nat type 2 and UPnP enabled? If you've never played an online game with lag and connection issues, I suppose you missed Red Dead Redemption and GTA IV at launch along with every wrestling and MMA game.

As for your shotgun not killing people that's why we have skill points. You're going to have to level up, if your shotty was OHK everything in the game why would you spend the SP for a better one? Or why would they even bother with the SP and ISK they spent on their suit? That isn't really a problem with the game, just you being a lower level. (And matchmaking)
As for the rest of it those are issues that CCP knows about and will be fixing. Hang tough, it really is a lot of fun. |

OP
Dust 514 is not a game that holds your hand, points you in a proper direction, and sets you down the path. You will have to forge your own path, learn as you bleed, and choose your battles carefully.
It took me a while before I understood the game's skills and character development. (I rerolled four times before I was satisfied with the direction that I had planned to go in....and of course with my in-game name)
In regards to the lag that you've had on your end, I hope that you bear in mind that this game is still in Open Beta. The issues are bothersome, but the game itself is very impressive. (Especially for a Free to Play)
Some final parting advice; run with a good squad. There's a significant difference between running by yourself and running with a well coordinated and concentrated group. |

Also signs of BS right at the start in this line :
Quote:My friends recommended this game (and am playing as an alt on my brother's account)
So your friends recommend it to you. Meaning they know you must have a PS3 to play it on. But for some reason you chose to play on your brothers PS3. Your brother who for some reason plays the game but never mentioned it, he left that to your friends.
Since you are on his machine, not yours then you live in the same house. And he still never mentioned it. Or perhaps you live apart and you went to his house after your friends recommended it to you because you like to travel and your PS3 is tired.
Your brother never took the time to explain a few things to you about the game he plays but lets you spend time on his PS3 playing it.
To Oph with you, via those beasts I mentioned. |

I hated this game when I first started playing it. I was in closed Beta and quit. I came back at Open beta and had to suck it up for about 2 weeks and than once I learned everything and the controls and how everything worked I started liking it. There are problems and red line snipers and dumb things about the game still but for the most part I think it has lots of potential. |

You have a bad friend, he needs to walk you though this game a bit. On everything.
Overall it is a beta, just right now the devs are very much hard at work on all factors including new tutorials.
As for skills to train it seems you have a hard time killing so train up Weaponry V. For reach train up Light Weaspon Sharpshooter. Also training up the shotgun skill itself helps immensely as it allows more pellets on target. |

i wrote an article about this last year. you're not the only one.
you guys have been playing cod for too long. and the devs there fooled you into thinking you were a good gamer.
most of you are below average... basaically a C, maybe a C- as gamers.
514 isn't really a casuals game. we sorta need you guys to do your usual cod garbage run around stuff in the pub rooms so you guys spend enough on aurum to keep CCP in the money, that way they can keep up devving this stuff.
but yeah, you're gonna find this game "too hard" and "confusing" because it has words and numbers in it.

TL;DR: So much wrong and that I personally don't like about the game that I don't see why anyone would play this. Why do you guys play this?
Answer: The potential is legit. Next to the potential, some of us actually have fun with this despite it's obvious flaws. The initial rage of not being able to kill anything easily was subdued by the fact that I actually got better over time, skill wise and my actual experience.

I'm hearing a lot of, "this game doesn't hold your hand," comments, but I haven't had any problems in that department. It is really just the ungodly lag and technical issues. The tutorials were pretty vague, but still told enough, and the "put SP into skills" part was hardly complex. Plus, I consider my brother my friend in response to some of you out there. |
