I just got out of Anders Caspersson's GDC talk, Dust 514: Reflecting the Universe, and took a few screens from his presentation:
This is what a district looks like on the backend
District combinations
Streaming possibilities
New vegetation screenshot (much more dense than I expected)
Some bit of info: - Atmosphere and moods can/will affect everything from surface infrastructure to weapons. He mentioned that your weapons could have view model textures swapped to show desert camo for desert battles or winter camo for winter, etc. - After he showed the battle for Caldari Prime vid he mentioned it was leaked on accident. Which explains why there was no official announcement about it. - I tried to trick him into telling me about a PC release, he locked right up and shook his head prompting me to change the subject. Before I did, he made sure to mention that the screens from the presentation were rendered on a PC. - The (PC) screens he showed of the new terrain moods and textures looked great.
Some questions I asked after the talk: Q. Why was there a move away from Carbon to Unreal engine? A. It was a decision made very early on in development to help with rapid deployment and because Carbon was primarily built for FiS (flying in space) and not with Dust in mind.
Q. Is there built in support for varying vehicle traction in the terrain maps? (requested by Ironwolf in IRC) A. Yes, there should be, but we don't have it functioning right now (no solid answer on whether it will be full featured in the May release)
Q. Will there be more than 2 terrain maps and 3 battle grounds in the May 6th release. A. (small bit about "don't quote me on this") There will most likely be 3 terrain maps and 5 battle ground in the May 6th release.
There is another talk tomorrow, if I get any more relevant info, I'll update this thread. |

Okay few more questions then if you have times.
Can Orbital Dropped Structures in OMS Ambush themselves be randomized, currently they're all predictable?
How possible is it for the Tiles used in procedural generation to get 'sub-tiles' to alter the interior layout of the far larger structure placements.
Are there any additional weather patterns being added in the near future such as fog, snow storms and rain?
Now that weather is mentioned and terrain traction being a property is there any consideration for weather to change up these properties such as snow storm making hard surfaces slippery while rain would make soft surfaces 'bog down'
Any consideration to have water in the game, and that to have it not instantly kill these super soldiers in armor designed for space operations? Maybe fall to death or redzone for going out too far. |

Keeping the game active on Playstation would be impossible if it was released on PC or integrated with the EVE client or whatever you guys are thinking. There's no way console players would be able to compete. |

Interesting... The PlanetID 40314537 corresponds to Luminaire II (Corufeu) so we might not be done fighting in Luminaire...
Thanks for the info, BTW. Awesome stuff!

-Dust isn't optimized for keyboard and mouse. It surely would be if it were released on PC and it would give those players a much bigger advantage than they already have. Not only that but you can mod and make all sorts of tweaks with the settings on PC that would boost game performance that would give you a further advantage over console players.
-We haven't had to deal with good keyboard and mouse players yet. KB&M users are mostly just EVE players who are not good at these types of games. The real KB&M players game on their PC, not Playstation.
Also Dust only gets attention because of the whole console players playing in the same universe as PC players aspect. If it were released on PC people would look at it as just another expansion to some random MMO game and you'd lose all exposure, support from Sony, and a lot of players. |

Hey if you are taking questions I've got one.
We know that you want to hold back on adding bodies of water to dust 514 at the moment due to design hurdles. However, is there a chance of having masses of water at least added to the redzones of maps? Being able to connect the temperate planets from space on the ground is very difficult when the planet shows it has 70% water and 30% ground, yet we see no water.

Also to note BF3 does water just fine, and the gameplay is very similar to Dust 514.
Where is the water guys :/
or this question
Will we see maps that take place in forests? jungles? Major city centers?
Of course, in Seeding the Universe, they said that battlefields are only about 5km on a side, so we could be right near an ocean and never know. |

Great, so instead of consoles and PC's working together you want multiboxing players? Because I don't so **** off with the PC version. What makes this game unique is the above, pushing this game to PC will ruin this. And it can't compete with Planetside 2, and the relationship with Sony will go to hell.
Now about the screenshots: So they render it on a PC... And we're supposed to be amazed? Until I see this running on the PS3 with smooth frame rate I am not impressed. |

There's many factors involved where I would agree with Moejoe here.
The game will run MUCH MUCH smoother on PC. FPS, textures rendering quicker, etc. The frames alone will make the PC players superior.
KBM is one thing, but putting console vs PC players on their rig of choice is not something I would say is fair. |

This may be an issue while dust is on the ps3 but once the majority of the playerbase has migrated to ps4 it will be less so as the ps4 is literally a pc with a custom os slapped on it. I have a feeling with all the social options the are planning for ps4 it will be much more kb/m friendly in general |

The whole point of terrain slots is that the information is sent by the server to the client, so the server could when launching a battle just give the client a randomized set of structures in the terrain slots.
If you look at the screenshot of the district data it only includes buildings and other structures that go in the terrain slots.
This indicates that turrets and OMS are done as events while in-battle, and as such it would just be a matter of adding randomization on the server side. |

I think I just misunderstood you, I was thinking of actually controlling two plus DUST clients at the same time
I suppose I could multibox if I really wanted to, but walking from the computer to the tv is a bit of a hassle.
Anyway, dat vegetation. I hope the new build will have nice anti-aliasing, it really makes a difference at 720p. |

The district beacons and planets would need to rotate again in EVE to properly reflect the day/night cycle on-ground, and we know having moving grids has been a huge technical issue. |

But it still means that districts all over a temperate planet will still reflect their position on a planet, even if fixed. For example a district on the nightside of a planet will have night battles occur on it, a district on the boundary of day and night should have sun rising/setting type atmospherics. |

They need to fix the grid code to allow for moving grids and/or update the grid code to make it handle merging / migration of grids if they make the district marker move to follow the district.
The latter should be possible as the marker (on earth-sized 24h planet) would migrate at a speed of about 500m/s, which is still reasonable. |

Exactly. Have you ever wondered why the planets, moons, asteroid belts, and stations never move? Because then CCP will have to calculate the locations for every warp destination to account for the motion as well as the location of every bookmark places in the system if they have to move them. It's a huge calculation that may put an unnecessary burden on the server. |

The alt should be the Squad Leader. On spawning, he uses the SL to mark his main as a defend order, then calls in the tank. He then puts both characters in the tank, his main (obviously) driving.
He can now turn off the alt's controller and TV, and earn +20% WP for the main, while also earning commission AND assists for the alt. |

The alt should be the Squad Leader. On spawning, he uses the SL to mark his main as a defend order, then calls in the tank. He then puts both characters in the tank, his main (obviously) driving.
He can now turn off the alt's controller and TV, and earn +20% WP for the main, while also earning commission AND assists for the alt. not to mention all of the OB strikes If you unlock a Precision Strike (because you don't want dead weight like that in a Corp Battle where you can earn an actual Orbital Strike, which is different), then you need to be ready to jump back on the alt to rain it down. |
