I was informed that next update, players will be able to choose a side in contracts. This means that a "mercenary" from Gallente Federation like myself could choose to fight in Gallente side. However, according to the law of war Art 47. Mercenaries
1. A mercenary shall not have the right to be a combatant or a prisoner of war. 2. A mercenary is any person who: (a) is especially recruited locally or abroad in order to fight in an armed conflict; (b) does, in fact, take a direct part in the hostilities; (c) is motivated to take part in the hostilities essentially by the desire for private gain and, in fact, is promised, by or on behalf of a Party to the conflict, material compensation substantially in excess of that promised or paid to combatants of similar ranks and functions in the armed forces of that Party; (d) is neither a national of a Party to the conflict nor a resident of territory controlled by a Party to the conflict; (e) is not a member of the armed forces of a Party to the conflict; and (f) has not been sent by a State which is not a Party to the conflict on official duty as a member of its armed forces.
Thus. if you fight for your own Faction, we aren't technically "mercenaries". I thought it was something to think about. |

Perhaps the Geneva Conventions don't apply on the other side of the universe thousands of years in our future? |

A. That. B. having an interest in which side wins for personal reasons can still be considered a personal gain related motivation, even if you were born there. |

We're not all anything, either.
Some of us are space pirates, some are humanitarian logistics personnel. Many are non-state actors but some hold very strong allegiances to their nation of birth and the grudges towards other nations that this allegiance comes with.
We're immortal super soldiers. I don't think it's unreasonable to distance ourselves from our places of birth, if the isolating difference that is our immortality causes us to stop identifying with our homelands... and then if we later fight for these nations, we are certainly mercenaries by the modern definition. |

Being of Gellente heritage doesn't mean you live there, or are a member of the political party that is fighting. Also, this only stipulates that you are not considered a mercenary in name when fighting for your own nation, as pertains to other laws of war (which is actually a benefit in some ways). You're still operating in a mercenary or contract manner, but are temporarily working for your own nation.
RL example, I can act as a mercenary for a foreign power, but for my own government, I would be a contracted soldier as applies to international rights and laws, if captured. Doesn't change the fact I'm a mercenary.
I'd love it if this game gave more opportunity for the entrepreneurial aspect of being a mercenary. ie. negotiating contracts, setting value and terms on service rendered and deliverables. |

you want to pay us how much? okay, we'll attack so and so at x time while you prep to attack the other place they have at y time.
hey so and so, how much would you pay for some very good info? okay then, first contract guys will be attacking other place at y time
and then you take that first portion you were hired to attack, get both payments(you performed your agreed upon duties, and the info you sold was good), and they're both too weakened from fighting each other to come after you right away.
I think I might be a terrible person. |
