While the art quality is really high, I think you may have taken a little bit to much liberty with the designs. It seems like most of the winners took the actual game art and worked with it in different ways but still staying really close to the original game art designs. The dropsuit and dropships you created look quite a bit different than anything I've seen in game.
That and CCP is probably dreading dealing with the broken laser rifle, I'm sure this reminded them of it |

Congratulations to those that won
I am really surprised Dunderkitty's cosplay didn't get a mention, she was hoping to come third so that she'd get to play EVE at more than 40 FPS. I watched her work her ass off on that thing over a few days and I think it cost her about -ú30 overall, plus the getting hold of a photographer for free and everything. Some serious effort and originality in my opinion.
I didn't expect to win myself, but the competition was a nice kick to get me to dust off my old Bamboo and start drawing again, it's been over a year already. |

Pro-tip for friendly art competitions. You can have more than three honorable mentions. It seems like a lot of great artwork/projects went by the wayside. |

I personally didn't use any official art for this precise reason and I noticed that a lot of the entries did. I noticed that at least two used official artwork with only subtle changes. I don't want to name and shame because the competition is over and I don't mind losing.
I would still love some critique however! :) |

I honestly pegged that as one of the top three. Someone mentioned there isn't a lot of colour in most of the picture; while that's true, I think that just helps to highlight the subjects in the picture (the drones, the dropship, the soldiers). |

Thx for good word. I was a near of throw away my bamboo over the window when I saw the results of the contest. That was my idea for this art. To show some ingame stuff + new concept and together put in winter mood to highlight this subject. |

My only complaint (and this is speaking as someone who works in a Tattoo Studio) is that the second place winner looks like a photo edit from the Dust 514 concept art.
I had a pretty good feeling it was going to make it up there but in the same sense I was confident that my work, being entirely original and done from a blank canvas, would have at least made runner up. This is why I was wondering what the criteria for choosing the winner(s) was.
If I had known that we could photo-edit some stuff I would have cheated my way through this entire competition O_o just saying.
In before "you sound bitter"
Edit: Big shame that the cosplay didn't even make it in the runner ups. She sort of deserved it for actually going out of her way to create PHYSICAL pieces. |

True, but this was nto cosplay competition was it? She should come to Fanfest and win craploads of promotions for herself by taking photos with people :)
But wait, photo edit? Could you link original photo from which the second place edited his way into it? I don't see any similar photo from concept art/screenshots from ccp that got published... And I am pretty sure I saw all the possible concept arts ever :D |

I do think as well that if we noticed it then surely so did the artists who judged the competition as they are the ones who made the pieces I guess. |

Then I'm wrong, don't crucify me over it - seriously, it's in poor taste as I only said it -looks- like a photo edit. If he did the work than congratulations but there were some entries in the competition that were very obvious photo edits and there were some very original pieces that obvious took a great deal of time and effort into creating that didn't even make runner up.
The cosplay entry, for example. They didn't say it wasn't allowed, they simply said it had to be digital art - and art is a very elusive term.
Go check out the Concept Art for the Caldari Assault suit. The detail and pose are remarkably similar. |

I am not crucifying you or anyone, just pointing it out :) But yeah cosplay is not really digital art. Digital art is thing you do on PC, usually done with graphics tablet or mouse or heavy software edits (3d modeling programs for example). http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Digital_art and http://browse.deviantart.com/digitalart/ (photo manipulation is included there too) |

By comparison:
Art -
The expression or application of human creative skill and imagination, typically in a visual form such as painting or sculpture,...: "the art of the Renaissance"
Works produced by such skill and imagination.
Again, art is a very elusive term and they did not specifically state that cosplay was not valid. Fine art was allowed if a digital picture was taken - so if fine art was not an automatic disqualification than neither should cosplay. Digital Art is not solely limited to a tablet or photo manipulation. |

Congratulations to all winners and honourable mentions!
My cosplay seems to have caused a bit of a fuss D: I guess I ought to mention I didn't really do it so that the cosplay itself was the main focus - I wanted to create an image of Dust that then involved me making a suit. If I had just done it as a cosplay I'd have just taken a picture of me in the suit, instead of finding a suitable location and editing it to make it seem like an image that could have been captured within the EVE Universe. As much as it would have been nice to win, the judges have made their decision based on the criteria they wanted, so I'm not too bothered either way :)
Some great entries, and I'm especially glad to see the boomstick in there - although only at number 2?! I thought for sure that was going to win.
Great work everyone! |

Hey everybody!! DisasterBug here! Wanted to say Congratulations to all those who won! ;) Really kool artwork, gotta say I saved a bunch of them just to look at over and over again wondering how they would be judged in comparison to mine, honestly, and it was a lot of fun! I learned a lot and tried so hard to match my talent even to the last couple of days or so!
I'm extremely into concept art! I play a good amount of games but I was working with manga illustration beforehand. I was a tad bit disappointed in my entry from the start but I really put a good amount of effort into it and I personally will enjoy this experience here on out and try harder! I didn't really seem to get any feedback on my image, from many people, but I would enjoy it :) So please let me know what YOU LOT thinks of it! Thanks guys! Much love mercsies ! lll be out with an eagle eye for the next contest :D
Here's the link to my contest image and another link to the official facebook art page* I posted the image to (for people who want to like and see the process*.)

Honestly, it's not that no one values cartoons or cosplay anymore. For me, I see that the visual aesthetic of Eve and Dust have been heavily defined as a hot, mechanical and high definition environment. To break from the mold means going against sensibilities and expectations for what embodies this environmental experience of the game's universe. Yet, there can be a place for comics and cosplay. Both of these mediums are cool and incredibly participatory in nature. To illustrate, the beauty of an iconic comic character comes out most when its designed features and personality are left mostly undefined, to which the viewer can fill in and complete. The viewer becomes part of making this character's story.
I could say a lot on this topic. For the sake of not being long winded, I highly recommend reading Scott McCloud on Understanding Comics: The Invisible Art. It's a fantastic read designed as a graphic novel. |
