I share a PS3 with my fiance and she has a Dust account on her own PSN. Will she be able to enter or will that count as disqualification? it's easy enough to prove we are two seperate people just by looking at the deviantart account used to upload, but I don't want to be disqualified, considering she doesn't play Dust anywhere near as often as I do, I just don't want her idea going to waste. |

Deadeyes Anterie wrote:While the art quality is really high, I think you may have taken a little bit to much liberty with the designs (which I think is fine, but I noticed all the winners took almost no liberty). It seems like most of the winners took the actual game art and worked with it in different ways but still stayed really close to the original game art designs. The dropsuit, dropships, and gun you drew look quite a bit different than anything I've seen in game, I suppose that is probably why they overlooked your artwork. That and CCP is probably dreading dealing with the broken laser rifle, I'm sure this reminded them of it Not being funny or anything but among most artists, using official art is considered cheating and also art theft. I personally didn't use any official art for this precise reason and I noticed that a lot of the entries did. I noticed that at least two used official artwork with only subtle changes. I don't want to name and shame because the competition is over and I don't mind losing.
I would still love some critique however! :) |

Aeon Amadi wrote:My only complaint (and this is speaking as someone who works in a Tattoo Studio) is that the second place winner looks like a photo edit from the Dust 514 concept art.
I had a pretty good feeling it was going to make it up there but in the same sense I was confident that my work, being entirely original and done from a blank canvas, would have at least made runner up. This is why I was wondering what the criteria for choosing the winner(s) was.
If I had known that we could photo-edit some stuff I would have cheated my way through this entire competition O_o just saying.
In before "you sound bitter"
Edit: Big shame that the cosplay didn't even make it in the runner ups. She sort of deserved it for actually going out of her way to create PHYSICAL pieces. You do sound bitter but then I'm sure I did and I don't mean it to. I did try not to mention particular entries however haha.
I do think as well that if we noticed it then surely so did the artists who judged the competition as they are the ones who made the pieces I guess. |

Sylvana Nightwind wrote:True, but this was nto cosplay competition was it? She should come to Fanfest and win craploads of promotions for herself by taking photos with people :)
But wait, photo edit? Could you link original photo from which the second place edited his way into it? I don't see any similar photo from concept art/screenshots from ccp that got published... And I am pretty sure I saw all the possible concept arts ever :D
The guy even posted "making of" process o.O Take a close look at the AR... |

On a side note I would love to know what was said about my own entry so I can do better next time. I've been trying to be an artist in the games industry for quite some time and if I can't come close to the top in a competition of only thirty or so entries then I know I don't yet have what is needed to come first in a job interview! I would be happier with critique from the Dust team than I would if I'd earned first place :) Link to make it easier: http://fav.me/d61a2sa Dude, I'm right there with you.
Speaking of which, here are some detailed shots: http://fav.me/d61t74m

Jadek Menaheim wrote:Honestly, it's not that no one values cartoons or cosplay anymore. For me, I see that the visual aesthetic of Eve and Dust have been heavily defined as a hot, mechanical and high definition environment. To break from the mold means going against sensibilities and expectations for what embodies this environmental experience of the game's universe. Yet, there can be a place for comics and cosplay. Both of these mediums are cool and incredibly participatory in nature. To illustrate, the beauty of an iconic comic character comes out most when its designed features and personality are left mostly undefined, to which the viewer can fill in and complete. The viewer becomes part of making this character's story.
I could say a lot on this topic. For the sake of not being long winded, I highly recommend reading Scott McCloud on Understanding Comics: The Invisible Art. It's a fantastic read designed as a graphic novel. Already did, Scott Mcloud is my damn hero! Understanding comics is another awesome one if you've read that too? I'm gonna dig that out asap haha. |
