Many new players don't understand that the starter fits are just to get them started. Many of them treat starter fits like classes, don't know how to edit them, or how to make new ones, and don't know how to get new items. Likewise, many don't even know how to get new skills, and level up. Its a problem because the amount of control we have over our own characters is one of the best things about Dust, and many new players completely miss it, and it colors their opinion of Dust.
A possible solution to consider is to have players make their own characters from scratch. Make them make their fits from items found in the militia market section as part of a mandatory tutorial. Lead them to the militia section, have them buy dropsuits, weapons, modules, and equipment, then guide them to the dropsuit fitting section to make fittings; let them choose ONE of those fittings to become an unlimited starter fit that never runs out, and make them understand that the other ones are of finite quantity and require restocking. Next guide them to the all skills page, and have them buy/use at least one skill book, and level it up.
This will require starting players out with more ISK, and more SP to compensate for the lack of starter fits and skills we start out with now currently.
Making players do things themselves will greatly improve comprehension in my opinion. It also makes more sense for a sandbox game driven by player choice. |

While I agree with what you are trying to accomplish here, I dont think that having only one starter fit is a good idea.
Since there are not going to be any more wipes or allowances for SP reallocation, new guys need a 'taste' of different weapons and setups before diving into the market.
I do really really like the idea of forcing them to 'create' their fits from scratch and not a pre-set lineup from the beginning. I think allowing 4 to be made would be appropriate.
Also, I dont think they should chose their race or background until they have achieve a certain number of SP. This gives them time to feel around before choosing where they want to go. |

+1 But I'd make one addition. Don't make the tutorial mandatory to alt characters, right now if I make an alt I get the tutorial video, even though I have this character with full comprehension of the game. I can skip that video, but if they make a tutorial that is mandatory, I would have to repeat it twice for my two alt characters. |

I think the saved game data on PS3 tracks if you did a tutorial already on that account, if it doesn't then it should. |

This is a good idea but I think it needs a "guided" tutorial where the player has to answer questions about how they want to play and gets directed to skill and fitting options that will support the their answers.
The difficulty, of course, is how expensive in design and development that kind of system is. |

I wrote a huge post in here the other day. Hit the post button and it didn't post. The draft, I assume, then saved but only for so long and now its gone.
Anyways...the long post linked to another New Player Experience thread (Duster Busters suggestion series) out there and pretty much buttered your toast, Kagehoshi. Kudos on another great idea. +1
I completely agree that something should change at character creation. My only point was to suggest that the mandatory tutorial run the new players through the market and the SP system and skill menu before they make their first fit, so they understand what they are fitting in the first place. Generally, I'm against mandatory, but so many players qq on Dust because they don't understand so many crucial aspects to the game. Make it skippable on alts and you mitigate most veteran complaints with the idea, I believe. |

Asked for this before Chromosome. Still not here, oddly enough.
Kitten It All, I would be somewhat happier if they would deliver the Pilot choice that was promised SSSSOOOONNN (BBBSSS). |
