1) falling damage with hills 2) HUD Opacity 3) Invisible walls 4) Explosions
Ok, The falling damage in this game can get ridiculous. I have no clue how the calculations work, but I've taken ridiculous amounts of damage before. On one hand, this happens a lot: the terrain looks like you can run over it and you can but then all of a sudden you hit a spot that you get stuck in. Ashland, Magus Peak, Line Harvest, they are all over these fairly tiny maps. When I get stuck on one, I'll take anywhere from 5 to 105 damage. I'm playing with a scout suit of only 70hp worth of shield On the other hand, I'll try to descend a similar hill. Going down these hills will not count as hitting the ground and when I reach the bottom I will take the full extent of the damage. Sometimes they have been instant deaths causing over 240HP (133 shield 109 armor).
As a scout, I almost naturally use a sniper rifle. The suits' bonuses plus skills and modules and SP's zoom features all make me very good at calling out where enemies are at. I can also pick off any lone-wolf types trying to get around or be a counter-sniper. And although I should be able to, I am useless against a tightly knit squad or a squad near a structure (i.e. Railguns, supply depots, etc.). Although sometimes, they don't need to be near those structures at all, they just have to be in front of any one of those that exists behind them, from 6 meters to 600 meters. This is all because the HUD giving enemy info (name, HP, suit level, suit name, damage efficacy) is completely solid. They enemy has found 100% cover since I can't see a single one- even though I can tell my entire team their names and they are on open ground just ripe for the taking All I can see are red text and symbols completely obscuring them. Again, conversely, the reticle on Sniper rifles anywhere near a directly lit surface is completely invisible.
Invisible walls are dumb. "hey, great! I've got LoS on the guy hacking the Null Cannon" *fires shot(s)* "Oh, that's cool. Even though I can see him I actually hit the outside of the Null Cannon." Seeing someone's body through empty space of other structures, like the supply depot. But it extends to all slanted surfaces like those 4 "boxes" on top of the 2 buildings in Line Harvest . At certain angles if someone is close to it, and you line up a headshot, the shot won't hit because of the "extra space" that the surface takes up that isn't actually there. Or shooting from too close to those edges will stop bullets right in front of your face.
My problem with explosions is fairly well talked about. The explosions are 2D disks that wont affect people at different elevations even if they're right on top of the explosion. this has cost me so many lives.
I'd really like these problems to be fixed, or at least worked on. I'd love to know if any are being addressed as well.

Scout Suits are Fragile as Kittens. Do not jump about when on hills Without full shields and full armor.
My alt's favorite Scout Death caused by his Heavy was stripping the Scout down to just a small fraction of their armor. Their panicked escape jump from the platform for Ashland D caused an immediate Stupid Scout Death. It was so satisfying I truly do not recall if there were any WP associated with it. It was still sweet beyond measure.
Running as a Scout Kal is extra careful yet has died when not paying attention. Sometimes taking the very long way around is the only solution. Not to mention without some level of Armor Repair (Logi assistance, the fancy Hive) you might well be stuck where you are once the armor is too low to survive the trip back out. One Must wait until the shield and stamina has fully recovered if one attempt failed. Remember that the second jump in a Scout Suit is normally higher and uses nearly half the standard Stamina amount. Plan accordingly.
Invisible walls are something that all UnReal game engine games put up with. It breaks immersion and is a hassle but that is the game engine of choice so we all get to adjust.
If you want updates on issues large and small there are solutions beyond plaintive calls on the Forums. Weekly Updates are available on both Requests/Feedback and Technical Support/Bugs forums. They are stickied near the top of the first page and are, normally, updated weekly on or about Thursday. Which might need to be offset from you local date. |
