I love the game, and what it might become. I have been checking in an out of eve for a long while now, seeing it grow, following the politics and loving the backstabbing and utter humiliation thats is happening all around in Eve. Dust is a wonderful move to make even more stuff happen. It adds much to the immersion that Incarna tried to provide and this time with functionality and easy access. The art is very much representative for all this nasty stuff going on. Its very functional and sublime. But diversity is also important, this raised a question for me: will you guys add flowers? Or do you have any plans for adding picturesque or natural environments (or parts) to Dust?
Many games try to be cool by aspiring to be more sublime then they already were. They add bigger and bigger explosions, and more cold, industrious or alien environments. Yet to make the sublime more sublime you can also contrast it by being more picturesque. I feel much more sorry trowing a bomb on a beautiful island than on a post apocalyptic world. The contrast really would enliven the world, and make it much more habitable for the human players behind the technological killing machines. The time spend in such environments are always at least a welcome change, sometimes they even make me happy. Even though we are often most concerned with destroying it all, subconsciously we all notice it. I always love seeing a garden popup in a technological landscape, or seeing a flock of birds annoy a cloaked dropship. Animals and nature made a game like metal gear solid 3 come to life, while that was off course a game of another nature. Both Half-Lives also employed it and you see it more and more in modern shooters.
The choice of going for automatically generated maps is very interesting from the functional point of view. But it also has consequences for the amount of immersion and gameplay. Large portions of gameplay issues are solved because there is less need for equality than other games need to have. But the for the immersion aspect it also has consequences, your maps are much less decorated right now. You have the slots, the building that fit into it, and the plain terrain. But this system could also give you guys endless artistic options! Especially if you guys manage to have props and actors, like trees and animals, connecting the nodes.
I would really be interested in seeing you guys finding a balance between technological style that identifies the Eve universe and a more human environment. Do you guys have plans for this in the long term? Its not an important concern for now, for now you guys should focus on getting it up and running. But perhaps with the crossing over to the power of the PS4? Where are you guys taking the going to take the art, beyond muzzle flashes and the sounds they generate? Which is also undoubtedly important and gives very interesting dev blogs for people who have no clue how it all works, like me. I think footsteps could use some work too! It really gives you the feeling you are connected to the terrain, and what it is your walking on. Just like wind and other environmental sounds. You guys already have great start with your sublime, technological artwork, where is it going next? Even if it stays an idea, it makes great concept art!
Not to forget: my girlfriend is always a lot more inclined to let me play when I am playing something like the green and lush Uncharted, than a cold technological game. Perhaps she has a point! And if not, she still has power. Always important to keep in mind :) |
