Definition of (Product Testing) Alpha:
"A very early version of a software product that may not contain all of the features that are planned for the final version."
Definition of (Product Testing) Beta:
"A test for a computer product prior to commercial release."
"Beta is going to be tweaking the game to work for a long term environment as alpha testing is going be rather short compared to beta and release versions. Beta will also be used for advertising the game and trying to bring in advertisers for the final version."
As we know, a great deal of features aren't currently implemented. Some of the more obvious are that the Logistics LAVs don't have a working Infantry Repair Module, as par their description. Another good example is the much hyped 'Crusader' and 'Pilot' suits which may or may not be coming in the next expansion, or even racial variants of all frames and vehicles.
Essentially we're playing a game that (as stated by CCP) is only implementing it's core gameplay, but is this really Beta Testing? Are we receiving all of the features slated for release in order to test them as we would in a Beta Gameplay, or is this more of a Alpha Testing with a more formal label?
Honestly, we can't blame CCP for allowing us to test out their product and provide feedback and we can surely respect the decision (otherwise we wouldn't be discussing it currently) however, there may be some confusion in the phases of which we are testing the game, but this all opinion.
It doesn't matter as long as the game is released with all of the intended features, working as intended. This thread is mostly just a public thought, and shouldn't be taken with any degree of severity. It's mostly just for idle discussion and to see where the community sits. Popcorn logic, so to speak.
So, what are your thoughts? Would you say that Beta Testing is an appropriate title? Would you say that the current state of the game is more slated for an Alpha Phase of testing? Discuss.

You make a good point. But tbh does it really matter at this point? beta or not, dust desperately needs new content or more and more people will stop playing...even the hardcore/loyal ones.

When it comes to MMOs, testing has to be done differently because you need 'massive' numbers and you need to do things differently - this is a staggered beta test. CCP may well have fully alpha tested all of the component parts we are playing now in-house but it needs testing by a huge audience to ensure it all fits together in every way possible. It has to be staggered (i.e. not everything tested at once), so that they can get the data they want at each stage. You can't just throw everything out there in a disorganised fashion and then hope to get the datasets that you required because everything will be all over the place and it'll be too much to handle. |

I agree with OP, because Alpha fits more from description But I agree and with you Django Quik. At one time we had battles to choose from. But then they removed that un gave as just instant battles. So yes, we are intended to test one peace of mechanics at a time. |

While you do make a good point, I'd like to make a counter argument by stating that without full content we're seeing a lot of issues currently that make the game seem to favor one or more tactics. Certain things tip the balance and when you balance in-game playstyles based on content that's not currently available, it makes feedback all the more difficult.
For instance, if cloaking were currently in game we'd experience a lot more of the Scout class utilizing the module due to their frail nature and the unpredictable scan system. Original conception was that the Scout focused on it's speed as it's primary defense, but as of recent changes (dropsuit tier HP changes and the like) it's been far more dependant on it's low sensor profile - something that I personally consider unreliable as -anyone- can spot you and your main defense is now rendered null.
Another good example is the AV/HAV argument, half of the community says that HAVs needs a buff and the other half states that AV needs a buff. How can we honestly know for sure when items such as the Plasma Cannon are not currently in play, or Statis Webifiers which would slow the vehicle down enough for the AV team(s) to take action against it?
Honestly, I feel that new content should be added more slowly with all original content added in at first. Waiting and hoping for weapons/concepts/playstyles to arrive to counter playstyles that are currently over-utilized is something that can break a game.
In Eve Online, Gallente were top dog for a long time. This changed when various nerfs were implemented, such as Drone Bandwidth. This even rendered certain ships ouright unusable as they depended heavily on drones, such as the Guardian Vexor. It could field ten drones at once, but when the Drone Bandwidth nerf came into play it suddenly couldn't field more than five simply because it didn't have enough bandwidth to do so.
When you implement nerfs too early, or even when you don't have all of the content available in game, it makes it incredibly hard to balance things and you wind up having to go back and re-buff some things that were over-nerfed.
Just my standpoint on things. |

Dust is a game that will evolve (much like EvE) over the course of many years. There is content planned and probably already in development for years to come but they can't just throw it all at us right now. Balancing and rebalancing will happen constantly over the course of the game - any nerfs or balancing that happens now is just to keep the testers happy and able to play, so they can find the real bugs and problems.
The beta testing described by your definition above is more applicable to out-of-the-box non-MMO short term games. Beta testing definitions need updating in order to apply to persistent evolving long term MMOs. |

This is a late Alpha pretending to be a Beta, and no where near been an "Open Beta".
Open Beta
The last stage of game development where the game is tested for bugs, and stability. Open Beta is the finish product of a game, with "some" features missing for marketing reasons, such as ; "Cutscenes / Story spoilers"
Dust 514 is not an " Open Beta ", and i wish people stop calling it that. |

You can't call Dust 514 a MMO right now, because is not. Will Dust 514 be a MMO in the future ? most like YES.
Once Dust 514 becomes a MMO, then we will be in the " Open Beta " stages. |

How is Dust not an MMO right now? It has a 'massive' player base, is 'multi-player' and 'online'. |

Massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG)
MMORPGs are distinguished from single-player or small multi-player online RPGs by the number of players, and by the game's persistent world.
MOBA (Multiplayer Online Battle Arena)
The objective of the MOBA Genre is for each team to destroy the opponents' Base, heavily guarded structures at opposing corners of the map. As in role-playing games, players level up their hero and use gold to buy equipment during the mission.

MMORPG is a sub-genre of MMO. MOBA is also a sub-genre of MMO. MMO simply means Massively Multiplayer Online game and encompasses many things from MMO adventure games, MMO text games, MMO FPS games, etc.
And if you really want to be picky, Dust does have a persistent world in that players' characters are persistent in their development. Just because the physical terrain and territory aren't persistent (yet! PC will change that), that's not the only type of 'world'. |

Yes, This is an alpha test at best, The smart ones know it.
They wanted a mountian of more features out by dec.2012, But then something must of happen because I think the core deign of the game has taken a huge shift, and now we are running 6 months behind.

I just started playing two weeks ago so I'll give you my thoughts for conversational purposes :P
My first thought was " Is this it ? " I've been involved with MMO beta's before. Rift, WoW and others. So I know what a Beta version is supposed to feel like. Yes, I understand that Dust is not a MMORPG but I'm still taken aback at the lack of ...... well anything.
All we have to do is fight battles and stand in a little room building our characters. Now don't get me wrong, even with the serious lack of content I'm very engaged with how fun the battles actually are. I'll be sticking around for a long while to see how the game turns out. |

So they set up the P2W store basically and keep some kind of a straight face about it.

This P2W stuff is ridiculous - no one forced you to pay for anything and I have no aurum gear at all and still win plenty; other people can (and do) do the same. |

I repeat: because of the size and complexity of this game this testing is what's known as 'staggered beta testing'. Alpha testing is not generally done by external unpaid unqualified unknown parties. |

I would never pay anything for a beta, least of all this one.
The way CCP seem to focus on P2W by hyping up new packs every five minutes but offering nothing for the current game except promises for a distant horizon speaks volumes about their clawing back of cost. No one wants to be a part of another 20%.
They had to make the game a public to test people's propensity to spend. That's all I see happening here. That's why it's been called one. Ready or no. |
